Smith picked up two assists in Saturday's 6-2 win over the Sharks.

EDGE Analysis

That's now two goals and seven points in the last seven games for Smith. The 30-year-old has never scored more than 36 points in a season, so it seems highly unlikely he'll keep this up for much longer, but if his scoring binge gets him off the Senators' fourth line it would improve his outlook for the rest of the campaign.

Smith logged 14:26 of ice time and recorded one shot, two PIM, one hit and one block in his return from injury against the Red Wings on Thursday.

EDGE Analysis

It was a decent first game back for Smith who was playing in his first contest following a nine-game stint on the sidelines due to a facial injury. The center figures to continue filling a bottom-six role for the time being, but could get bumped up at some point if he can re-discover the scoring touch he displayed in the first three games of the year.

Smith (face) has been taken of injured reserve, per the NHL media site.

EDGE Analysis

Activating Smith was the final step to clear him for action against the Red Wings on Thursday. The center figures to slot into a fourth-line role to start, having missed the previous nine outings due to injury, but could move his way up as he gets back to game speed.

Smith (face) will return to the lineup against the Red Wings on Thursday, Brent Wallace of TSN.ca reports.

EDGE Analysis

Smith -- who still needs to be officially activated off injured reserve -- figures to slot into a bottom-six role versus Detroit. The center has missed the last nine games after getting hit in the face with a puck. Prior to getting hurt, the 30-year-old notched five points in nine outings while averaging 15:38 of ice time.

Smith (face) is targeting a return to action next week, Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun reports, perhaps as early as Nov. 15 versus Detroit.

EDGE Analysis

Smith was wearing a full face shield and non-contact sweater at Thursday's practice session, but the fact that he was back on the ice is a good sign in his recovery. The center's timeline effectively rules him out for the Sens' next three contests during which Nick Paul figures to slot into the lineup.

Smith (face) had surgery Monday to repair facial fractures, Dean Brown of the Senators Radio Network reports. Per the NHL media site, the center has been placed on injured reserve.

EDGE Analysis

While the team has not provide a specific timeline yet for how long Smith is going to be out, it certainly isn't going to be short term considering he suffered three fractures of his Zygomatic (cheek) bone. With Brady Tkachuk (leg) out until mid-November, the club will need to promote a forward from AHL Belleville in order to bolsters its depth.

Smith (face) left Friday's game versus Colorado and will not return.

EDGE Analysis

Smith fell into the back of Matt Calvart's skate in a scary play. The incident took place in the second period and the team is likely to issue an update on Smith's condition following the game.

Smith -- who was waived by the Senators on Tuesday -- will dress and play in Thursday's contest against the Blackhawks, Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun reports.

EDGE Analysis

Smith's placement on waivers was a bit of a surprise, but there is no indication at this point that another team has claimed him. As a result, he will lace up the skates for the Senators as usual, though the veteran forward's mood has likely, understandably, changed. Still, Smith should take the ice Thursday and remains with the club for the time being. However, Ottawa has been trying to trade the veteran forward for a while now and those trade talks are unlikely to die down after Tuesday's move.

Smith was waived by the Senators on Tuesday, Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun reports.

EDGE Analysis

This is a brazen move considering Smith is a perennial special-teams contributor who had seasonal outputs of 36 and 32 points, respectively, in a middle-six role with Ottawa before he slipped to five goals and 14 assists over an injury-riddled 2017-18 campaign (68 games) last year. It seems unlikely that he won't get scooped up by another club, but stranger things have happened and it appears that the Senators want to rebuild from the ground up after trading two-time Norris Trophy winner Erik Karlsson.

Smith finished the year with five goals and 14 assists throughout 68 games, averaging 16:43 of ice time.

EDGE Analysis

Even though Smith was never tearing up the scoresheet, he was still logging a goal or assist every couple games throughout most of the season, but completely disappeared after the start of March -- he logged just one assist in his last 20 games. The 30-year-old was victimized in the goal column though, as he had a shooting percentage of just four, compared to his mark of 10.5 last year. Smith's minus-32 was also the lowest of his career, but that largely stems from Ottawa's struggles throughout the season. Smith will be back above the border next season for the second campaign of his four year deal, but with Matt Duchene and Jean-Gabriel Pageau due back as well, he'll likely reprise a role in the bottom six.
