We'll forgive Greiss for losing to one of the hottest teams in the league. The Islanders didn't exactly send a lot of rubber toward Hurricanes netminder Petr Mrazek, and Greiss wasn't able to do enough to keep them in the contest. The German goalie has allowed six goals over three appearances (two starts) this season, for a 2.40 GAA and a .917 save percentage. He'll likely ride the pine Saturday as Semyon Varlamov should start versus the Panthers.

According to Andrew Gross of Newsday, Greiss was the first goalie off the ice at morning skate, indicating he'll get the start in goal in Friday's road matchup with the Hurricanes.

EDGE Analysis

Greiss was razor sharp in his season debut Sunday against Winnipeg, turning aside 35 of 36 shots en route to a tidy 4-1 victory. The German netminder will look to stay dialed in while attempting to pick up his second win of the season in a tough road matchup with a red-hot Carolina club that's won four straight games to open the 2019-20 campaign.

Greiss replaced Semyon Varlamov midway through the second period of Tuesday's 5-2 loss to the Oilers, allowing seven goals on eight shots.

The 33-year-old was solid, but Varlamov has dug too big a hole for the Islanders to climb out of. Greiss has been the better of the two netminders in the early going this season, and as a result might have the advantage in terms of playing time for the next couple of weeks.

Varlamov is likely to enter the season as the technical starter for the Islanders, but coach Barry Trotz showed last season that he isn't afraid to rotate goaltenders and/or ride the hot tender. Assuming no injuries, Greiss is likely to start in the neighborhood of 30-35 games this season.

The win kept the Isles in second place in the Metropolitan. Greiss had lost his last two starts against the Habs and Jackets, but came up huge against the kitties. Both Greiss and Robin Lehner have had an outstanding season in a platoon. It will be interesting to see which one the Isles roll in the postseason or if they will continue a platoon.
