ADD'EM: WARD SHOWS SOME LIFE! primepucks.com Mon 11/3/14 5:23 AM
I will be the first to admit that this week's crop of must-adds are nowhere near sure bets, but there is alot of high upside associated with the young wingers, plus a few goalies that have done it before. So, there is plenty of opportunity to bolster your team's output by adding the right guy from this list:
Marcus Johansson LW, Washington:With 4 points in his last 4 games, the left winger has been flourishing lately on the second line with Andre Burakovsky. While Johansson didn't deliver last season as a top liner(44 pts/80 gms), he is still one of the team's better offensive weapons and has the ability to pad 10-15 points to last season's point total. Also, the 24-year old continues to play on the primary power-play unit alongside Ovechkin and Backstrom. Need I say more?
Nikita Kucherov RW,Tampa Bay:The 21- year old has been white hot with nine points over the last five games. He has played himself up to the 2nd line while clicking with Ondrej Palat and Tyler Johnson. With 11 points in 12 games, he is off to a tremendous start but keep in mind that second-year players will have their offensive production hit a wall a few times. If you can stomach the inconsistencies, this youngster has the skill to put up 50+ points provided he stays in the top-six. He is well worth the shot..
Derek Stepan C, New York Rangers: His impending return to the Blueshirts could provide the jolt of confidence that the pivot-deficient Rangers need to revive their offense. Coming off a career-high 57 points, he will probably be back centering the "hot" Rick Nash which should only help him get back in the offensive swing of things. This addition is a no-brainer if he is available.
Ray Emery G, Philadelphia: Three winnable home games on the upcoming docket and Steve Mason's well-documented struggles could contribute to a huge fantasy week for Emery. Despite a poor outing against Lightning his last time out, he could grab all three starts a if he gets the nod and plays well against Edmonton. Berube will ride the hot hand, so only start him if you are in desperation for 2nd goalie help.. High risk/ high reward candidate with potential to unseat Mason.
Cam Ward G, Carolina: Yeah, I know I haven't been high on him but man, did he look good this weekend in securing back-to-back wins for the previously winless Hurricanes! If he is still available and you are stinking up the joint in the goalie department, give him a chance and stash him on your bench. Carolina has plenty of money ...

SUNDAY MORNING COFFEE - OCTOBER 26, 2014 primepucks.com Sun 10/26/14 8:37 AM
Got my coffee and ready to roll, but no roll with my coffee this morning.
Not only did the San Jose Sharks lose to the Buffalo Sabres 2-1 Saturday, they have now lost 4 in a row. I thought Buffalo was the sort of team that you stopped losing streaks with?
The Sabres scored twice on 15 SOG. Just think, if they took more shots they'd score more goals. If only it worked like that.
You just know that the Bruins are going to be strong once again in the Eastern Conference when they lose their top d-man for at least 4-6 weeks and can slide a Dougie Hamilton in and he gets 3 points in Chara's place.
When will Jonathan Bernier show up because Toronto is counting on him?
The Leafs need Phil Kessel to be more consistent if he is going to be their true leader.
Carey Price is quietly 6-1-0.
A lot of goalies that had troubles last year seem to have gotten off to good starts this year. Players like Jimmy Howard, Braden Holtby and Robin Lehner to name a few.
That line of Plekanec, Parenteau and Galchenyuk seemed to be buzzing all night long. All 3 could be in for solid years.
Cory Schneider is going to start every game for the New Jersey Devils this year. Not really.
This Damon Severson kid is soooo good. He out-scored Erik Karlsson 2-1 and Karlsson is only known for being the best offensive defenseman in the league.
Milan Michalek decided to show up last night with a 2 assist night.
A lot of people don't have Philly making eh playoffs, but I think otherwise. Once Steve Mason gets straightened out, the Flyers will be tough.
Michael Del Zotto has 5 points in 8 games but is not getting a lot of power play time at the moment.
Pair of sevens last night as the islanders and the Wild laid a lot of hurt on their visitors, although the Dallas Stars put up 5 themselves. Thank goodness for Frans Nielsen and his 3rd period hat trick.
After his blazing start since being acquired from Boston, Islanders d-man Johnny Boychuk has really quieted down on the score sheet although he is still getting lots of ice time.
Can you believe Darcy Kuemper is 4-1-0 with 3 shutouts already for Minnesota? Smells like a Brian Elliott career year.
I think it's safe to say that Tampa Bay's Jonathan Drouin has had a successful first week in the NHL.
Arizona defenseman Keith Yandle doesn't get the credit he deserves. Playing out in the desert doesn't help.
With an n 0-5-2 record to start the season, you now know how much Eric Staal means to the Carolina Hurricanes.
Have a great week and good luck in ...

Mason was pulled after allowed four goals on 18 shots in the Flyers comeback win over the Stars on Saturday. Despite Ray Emery leading them to the W, the Flyers will go back to Mason tonight in Chicago. He is still searching for his first win of the season, but it won't come easy tonight on the road vs. the Hawks.

Mason allowed three goals on 28 shots in a loss to the Ducks on Tuesday. He has yet to chalk up a win while posting a 3.29 GAA and .884 SV% in his first three starts. It will not get any easier on Mason tonight when he takes on Jamie Benn, Tyler Seguin and the Dallas Stars.
Goalie Start: Mason will start Tuesday vs. the Ducks. dailyfaceoff.com Tue 10/14/14 2:56 PM
Mason gave up five goals on 25 shoos in a 6-4 loss to the Devils last Thursday. Ray Emery looked sharp on Saturday, but the Flyers will go back to Mason tonight at home vs. Anaheim. It is not an easy matchup whatsoever and on a busy nit across the NHL take a look at your other matchups first.
BETWEEN THE PIPES: INTO THE WILD GOALTENDING primepucks.com Tue 10/14/14 11:44 AM
One thing you have to say about the Minnesota Wild in their attempt to be competitive in the Western Conference is that they have really transformed their team over the past few years by acquiring some top-level NHL talent along with mixing in their fine young talent which was all supposed to complement their strong point, their goaltending. Who would know that their goaltending would come apart at the seams last year with last year's starter Niklas Backstrom falling to injury, and Josh Harding succumbing to his MS illness? Harding in fact had been posting spectacular numbers with a 1.65 GAA and a .933 SP until he was stricken again. It all was going right for the Wild until they lost Harding. Backstrom had been playing decent when Harding went down but re-injured himself opening the door for rookie Darcy Kuemper.
The rookie goaltender had only 6 games of NHL experience in 2012-2013 before being thrust into the role of Number 1 with the injuries to both Backstrom and Harding last year. His play wasn't consistent enough for the Wild as they pushed to make the playoffs, thereby forcing the Wild to trade for a veteran goaltender in Ilya Bryzgalov who had signed on with the Edmonton Oilers in November. In his new role as the Wild's No. 1, Kuemper posted a 2.43 GAA and a .915 SP which weren't terrible, but as I've said earlier, he lacked consistency which is something you would expect from a rookie goaltender.
Fast-forward to training camp 2014. Minnesota was all set to start the season with Backstrom and Harding and let Kuemper work on some things in the minors. However, Harding broke his foot and was suspended by the team making way for Kuemper to start the season with the big club. The thought was to platoon the two until either one got on a roll. Kuemper was chosen as the starter for the home opener against Colorado and pitched a shutout. In fact, he played so well that he got the nod in the back end of the home-and-home series with the Avalanche and proceeded to blank them again. To begin the season with two shutouts against last year's darlings, the Colorado Avalanche is very impressive indeed. Wow!
Even before pitching those back-to-back shutouts, the road was paved for Kuemper to be the number one goaltender in Minnesota when Harding went down to the broken foot. Backstrom only had two good years with the Minnesota Wild and that was back in 2007-2008 & 2008-2009. In those two years he posted 33 and 37 wins respectively, with good metrics. He...
Goalie Start: Mason was the first goalie off of the ice, may start ... dailyfaceoff.com Thu 10/9/14 2:56 PM
Both Mason and Ray Emery shared the starter's net this morning, but Mason was the first one off, which suggests he will get his second start in as many nights. Mason allowed two goals on 33 shots (.939 SV%) in a 2-1 loss to the Bruins in last night's season opener.

Mason allowed two goals on 33 shots (.939 SV%) in a 2-1 loss to the Bruins in last night's season opener. It was a nice start to the season for Mason, who is trying to find some consistency from season-to-season. He will try and play well again tonight, but get the Flyers into the win column this time around.
Goalie Start: Mason starts vs. the Bruins tonight. dailyfaceoff.com Wed 10/8/14 2:56 PM
Mason struggled in the preseason going 1-2-1 with a 3.35 GAA and .876 SV% in four preseason outings. Mason is coming off of a strong year in which he won 33 games with a 2.50 GAA and .917 SV%. The challenge for Mason is to follow that up with another good year, because year-to-year consistency has been his Achilles heel since he entered the NHL in 2008-09.
