Steve Begin announced via his Twitter account on Thursday that he has retired from playing hockey. He did so based on the advice of his doctor. Begin played in 36 games with the Calgary Flames last season and he signed a one-year contract the team's AHL affiliate in Abbotsford this past summer. Begin wasn't able to play in any games for the Heat, though. He recorded 108 points and 561 penalty minutes in 524 career contests.

Steve Begin, 34, is the Calgary Flames nominee for the Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy, as chosen by the Calgary Chapter of the Professional Hockey Writers' Association. The Masterton goes to the player who best exemplifies the qualities of perseverance, sportsmanship and dedication to hockey and the league award has been won by a pair of Calgary Flames in the past. Those winners were Lanny McDonald and Gary Roberts. "When you love the game, it's easy," said Begin, who has collected four goals and eight points in 36 games this season. "When you like playing hockey, it's like a kid in a candy store. You just go out and have fun. That's what hockey is about. If you like what you're doing, it makes it easier for you."

The Calgary Flames got a surprising boost from aging forward Steve Begin on Wednesday during their almost-as-unexpected 3-2 win against the Detroit Red Wings. Begin's two tallies including what was eventually the game-winner. He only had two goals and four assists coming into tonight's games, so he now has eight points on the season.

Steve Begin returned to action on Friday April 12.

Steve Begin netted his first NHL goal since 2010 on Sunday. Before Calgary's 4-3 victory over Dallas, Begin's last NHL goal was netted on May 1, 2010 in Game 1 of the Boston Bruins' series against the Philadelphia Flyers. If you want to only include regular season contests, then Begin's goal was his first since April 10, 2010. Needless to say, he has no fantasy value.

Steve Begin has agreed to a one-year, two-way deal with the Calgary Flames. Begin's contract is worth $525,000 annually at the NHL level. He hasn't played in an NHL game since Dec. 18, 2010 and never had much fantasy value.
