Nothing is official yet, but look for Stephen Weiss to return from injury Sunday afternoon in Buffalo. Weiss has missed three consecutive games due to a groin injury but coach Dineen said he was looking at Sunday's contest in Buffalo for a possible return date. Weiss was paired with Tomas Fleischmann and Kris Versteeg last season to form one of the better lines in the NHL and would potentially be playing their first game together this season. We will wait for an official confirmation in a few hours to update his status.

Stephen Weiss (groin) worked hard during Thursday's skate, but coach Kevin Dineen doesn't want to rush him back to action. The Panthers don't want to risk him tweaking his groin and having the injury linger or get worse, so Weiss won't play Thursday night. Dineen said is looking at Sunday's contest in Buffalo for a possible return date for Weiss.

Stephen Weiss attempted to skate on his own Monday, but the look on his face suggested that he wasn't ready to return from what is believed to be a groin injury. It appears to be likely that Weiss will miss his third straight game on Tuesday night because of his "lower-body" injury. Weiss was ice cold prior to getting hurt with one assist, a minus-4 rating and no shots in three games to open the season.

Stephen Weiss was out for the third consecutive day with an undisclosed lower-body injury Saturday night. Weiss practiced Thursday morning but then informed Panthers head coach Kevin Dineen later that afternoon he couldn't play against the Senators. "He had been a little tender for a couple days," Dineen said. "You always test how you feel and if it's heading in the right direction. I don't think it was. He needed to step back and start feeling healthy. Weiss in particular has struggled thus far in this shortened 48-game season.

Stephen Weiss was a last-minute scratch for the Panthers in Thursday's 3-1 loss to Ottawa. Florida GM Dale Tallon believes his top center has a minor lower-body injury, but his absence left an already depleted roster without another important forward. Weiss joins Kris Versteeg (groin), Sean Bergenheim (groin) and Marcel Goc (ankle) on the sidelines. Consider him day-to-day for now.

Stephen Weiss and Tomas Fleischmann have had trouble getting going early into this season. The two of them have three assists and no goals between them three contests into the 2013 campaign. The third member of their productive trio from last year, Kris Versteeg, hasn't been able to play yet in the abbreviated season because of a lower-body injury and it has seemingly had an adverse effect on the Panthers' top line. Weiss in particular has struggled thus far with no shots and one assist after three contests.

Panthers general manager Dale Tallon has championship expectations. Florida went from last place in the East to Southeast Division champions last season. "We gave [the fans] good value last year and that's what we hope to do this year,'' Tallon said. "We believe in them, hopefully, they believe in us, and we're going to win some hockey games and win a championship.''

Stephen Weiss isn't concerning himself with his expiring contract yet. "That's the last thing on my mind," he said after Monday's practice session at the Glacier Ice and Snow Arena in Lighthouse Point. "It's getting back with the guys on the ice and trying to win some hockey games. That's my focus and I'll deal with my contract stuff when that comes up at the end of the season." He has played his entire 637-game career with the Panthers and could hit unrestricted free agency this summer if a deal isn't reached. That is probably another reason why Weiss' name has come up in the rumor mill as a possible piece to land Roberto Luongo from Vancouver.
