Galiev agreed to terms on a two-year contract with KHL Ak Bars on Friday.

After failing to crack the 23-man roster for the Capitals this past season, Galiev will join the KHL. Despite being from Russia, the 25-year-old has never played for any European based club aside from national junior teams. Instead the winger came up through the QMJHL with the Saint John Sea Dogs before being selected in the third round of the 2010 NHL Draft. Galiev put up a solid 40 points in 56 outings for AHL Hershey last season, so don't be surprised to see him get another look from an NHL club down the road.

Christian Thomas, Brad Malone, and Paul Carey were the other forwards hitting the waiver wire as Washington slims down its roster before Opening Night. Galiev, known to be an offensive creator, has played in 26 NHL games over his career, totaling one goal and three assists.

Galiev will draw into the lineup if T.J. Oshie (illness) is unable to play, Isabelle Khurshudyan of The Washington Post reports.

Galiev has not played since Mar. 1 against the Penguins, but with T.J. Oshie (illness) not on the trip for Friday's game in New Jersey, his return to the lineup seems likely. The 24-year-old winger is slated to play on the fourth line with Mike Richards and Daniel Winnik.

Galiev is filling in for Alex Ovechkin (lower body), who was suspended by the NHL for skipping the All-Star game festivities over the weekend. Ovechkin's injury is not believed to be serious, so this prominent assignment for Galiev is likely limited to Tuesday's game only. However, the increase in ice time he will get -- not to mention the quality of his linemates -- gives Galiev some sleeper potential in daily fantasy leagues, so keep him in mind when you fill out your lineup.

Galiev will take Michael Latta's place on the fourth line and is working with the second power-play unit as well. With just two assists in seven games this season, the third-round pick from the 2010 Draft is a reach outside of deeper leagues even with the special teams assignment.

While Galiev has plenty of upside handling the puck, the Russian will need to start logging meaningful minutes before he will warrant attention in the fantasy world.

Galiev, in the lineup for the second straight game Thursday night against Chicago, picked up an assist in just 8:57 of ice time.

EDGE Analysis

Fourth-line minutes don't present Galiev with a strong opportunity for production, but his smart pass to find John Carlson in open ice should get the young Russian a bit more notice. It seems like Galiev's been kicking around the Caps' organization forever, since he was drafted in the third round way back in 2010, but he's still just 23 and coming off a 25-goal AHL season. There's fantasy intrigue to be found here if he can stick and work his way up in the forward mix.

Galiev was a healthy scratch in the season opener Saturday, but he could make his season debut Tuesday night if Alex Ovechkin, a game-time decision for personal reasons, is unable to play against the Sharks, CSN Mid-Atlantic's J.J. Regan reports.

EDGE Analysis

The Capitals are literally hurting at the forward position, as Nicklas Backstrom (hip) and Chris Brown (hand) are on the mend. Galiev is a shifty winger who could be asked to hold down the fort if Ovi doesn't end up playing. According to the report, he worked on the top line and on the power play in Tuesday's morning skate, but will not be inserted on that scoring line if called upon to play. "We'll move lines around," Capitals head coach Barry Trotz said.
