Shane Hnidy has announced his retirement and he will work as the new radio color analyst for Winnipeg Jets games on Sports Radio 1290 this season.
The 35-year-old defender skated in three regular season games and three playoff contests with the Stanley Cup champion Boston Bruins in 2010-11. He has amassed 71 points and 633 penalty minutes in 550 career matches. Hnidy had hoped to continue playing this year, but the offers weren't there for him so he figured this was the next best thing. "We're Manitobans. This is home," he said. "And to be able to work here and be a part of the NHL still was a big part of the decision for me. I worked really hard to get to the NHL and I wanted to continue to work in it in some capacity." We wish him the best in his future endeavors.

Shane Hnidy is hoping that the Winnipeg Jets will show an interest in him when the unrestricted free agency period begins on Friday.
"It would be a dream for me to play in my home province," Hnidy said. He sustained a shoulder injury while attending the Coyotes' training camp on a tryout basis. Hnidy eventually signed with the Bruins and was finally able to make his season debut on April 2nd. He ended up playing in three regular season games and three playoff contests for the Stanley Cup winners. Hnidy already has some experience with the Atlanta-Winnipeg franchise. He played for the Atlanta Thrashers in 2005-06 and 2006-07.
