Monahan hasn't been all that effective in general, with a minus-4 rating, six shots on net and five hits so far. The 27-year-old doesn't appear to have the favor of head coach Darryl Sutter either -- Monahan has slipped solidly into a bottom-six role while Mikael Backlund centers the second line. Never much of a defensive forward, Monahan will have to produce points to make an impact. Further struggles could see him lose his spot on the top power-play unit, which could force fantasy managers to find higher-scoring centers on the waiver wire.

Monahan (hip) is expected to participate in training camp following offseason surgery but may be limited in preseason contests, Hailey Salvian of The Athletic reports.

EDGE Analysis

Even if Monahan doesn't play much during the preseason, all signs point to him being ready to go for Opening Night against the Oilers on Oct. 16. Due to the limited 2020-21 season, Monahan posted the lowest point total of his NHL career (28) but should be capable of rebounding this year. Whether he can get back to being a 30-goal scorer, something he's done three times in his career, remains to be seen but he'll be a top-end fantasy target nonetheless.

Monahan will have surgery to repair a hip injury next week and will miss the last four games of the season.

Monahan is expected to be ready in time for the training camp ahead of the 2021-22 campaign, which is good news for dynasty/keeper league managers. With the shortened season and hip problem, the 26-year-old will miss out on the 30-point mark for the first time in his NHL career, falling short of the 34 points he recorded in his rookie campaign. It's the second straight year in which Monahan failed to reach the 25-goal mark, something that should be a red flag for fantasy players.
