Sean Avery might make his season debut on Saturday. Avery cleared re-entry waivers on Tuesday, but he was a healthy scratch on Thursday. Avery is known in fantasy leagues for his ability to rack up a ton of penalty minutes while still giving you 20-35 points. However, he's already spent a good chunk of this season in the minors and there's no guarantee he'll stay with the Rangers this time around. A trade is also very unlikely, given that no other team wanted him when he was on re-entry waivers.

Sean Avery participated in Wednesday's practice with the Rangers, but he won't dress in Thursday's contest against Anaheim. Coach John Tortorella will ice the same lineup that defeated the San Jose Sharks by a score of 5-2 on Monday. The New York bench boss also feels that Avery would benefit from some extra practice time before he gets into a game.

Sean Avery cleared re-entry waivers and will be available to play in the Rangers next game Thursday against visiting Anaheim. The move summon to the agitator from Connecticut (AHL) was necessitated by a Michael Rupp knee injury. Avery initially cleared waivers and was assigned to Connecticut on Oct. 5. He reported to the minor-league club on Oct. 11.

Rangers coach John Tortorella still believes that the Rangers were right to demote Sean Avery, but he said that calling him up now is "the right hockey decision." Avery has been placed on re-entry waivers and will be eligible to make his season debut on Thursday if he clears. The decision to call Avery up was made after Michael Rupp sustained a knee injury. "That has a lot to do with it, Sean fills that role," Tortorella said. "Sean's biggest strength are his legs. He's a terrific skater. The big part of his game is his forechecking, his play underneath the hashmarks. When a guy like Rupper goes out, to me, it's the right call for Sean."

According to Pat Leonard of the New York Daily News, the New York Rangers won't actually clear any cap space or save money if Sean Avery is claimed off re-entry waivers. The Rangers are only responsible for half of Avery's salary and cap hit because they originally claimed him off re-entry waivers from the Dallas Stars. However, if another team claims him off of re-entry waivers, the Stars will be off the hook while the Rangers will still be responsible for their half of the cap hit and salary. With that in mind, the Rangers probably wouldn't have put Avery on re-entry waivers unless they thought he would clear.

Sean Avery has been placed on re-entry waivers by the New York Rangers. The Rangers are the second team to place Avery on re-entry waivers since he agreed to his current four-year/$13.5 million contract. That being said, unlike the Dallas Stars who placed him on re-entry waivers in the hope that he would be claimed, the New York Rangers might actually want to use him. If he clears re-entry waivers, Avery could play on Thursday.

The New York Rangers pest might be placed on "re-callable waivers" on Oct. 31, although the 48-hour rule dictates that he cannot play on Monday. Nick Kypreos reports that Sean Avery might be on his way back to the NHL. If that report is true, then Avery would be able to make his season debut in Madison Square Garden against the Anaheim Ducks on Thursday.

Sean Avery doesn't feel like he got a fair shot to make the Rangers' roster out of training camp and he doesn't believe he will be back with the team this season. "I'd say it's pretty obvious," Avery told ESPNNewYork.com. "I'll let everyone else decide for themselves." He skated with AHL Connecticut on Wednesday after having a cortisone shot for his injured right shoulder Tuesday. Avery said that he rejected a lucrative offer to play in Russia and could have played elsewhere in Europe for less money as well.

Sean Avery has reported to Connecticut of the AHL alleviating the Rangers of $1.9-million of salary cap space. Avery cleared waivers on Oct. 5 when he was assigned to Connecticut. He was in the final season of a 4-year, $15.5-million deal he signed with Dallas in 2008. His reporting to the AHL affiliate frees up $1.9-million in cap space for the Rangers.

Sean Avery's days with the New York Rangers appear over. The noted agitator cleared waivers Wednesday and was assigned to the Connecticut Whale of the AHL. The move clears his US$1.93 million from the team's salary cap. Avery was in the final season of the contract he originally signed with the Dallas Stars. He didn't play in New York's final two exhibition games in Europe, and it became inevitable he would be cut.
