That's an awfully nice way to celebrate your 23rd birthday, now isn't it? Although he continues to come along slowly due to limited minutes, Murphy's at least cracked double-digit points, as he's now up to 10 (all assists) in 31 games this year. That's not much, but Murphy has the draft pedigree and the AHL track record to suggest he's got bigger things ahead of him in the next few years.

Coach Bill Peters indicated Monday that Murphy (upper body) will be ready to play Tuesday against the Sabres.

After missing out on Saturday's contest against the Wild because of the issue, it appears a couple days of rest has done the trick. The 22-year-old blueliner doesn't see a ton of ice time (averaging 17:43 this season), but his presence on the power play leaves him in consideration as a cheap daily option. The blueliner has been somewhat productive for the Canes over 26 contests this season, collecting seven assists over that span, but remains out of consideration in the majority of fantasy leagues.

The helpers were opportune indeed, as Murphy assisted on Jeff Skinner's first goal to cut a 2-0 Ottawa lead in half, then got a piece of Skinner's game-tying second goal in the third-period's final moments. Although he only got a secondary assist, Murphy was as responsible as anyone for that goal, with his confident pinch into the offensive zone keeping the play alive and leading to Victor Rask's play out in front that Skinner finished off. That's three helpers in the last two games for Murphy, and although his ice time remains capped, it's well worth noting that it leaped to 18:21 in this one from an average of 14:39 in the first two games following his recall. However, the second-unit power-play time he's seeing will likely dry up once Justin Faulk (leg) is ready to return.

Murphy has tallied four assists through 19 games with Carolina this season, as well as seven goals and 15 assists in 30 games with AHL Charlotte. He is likely being called up to play as starting defensemen Justin Faulk and James Wisniewski continue to deal with nagging injuries. Murphy could see the ice as soon as Tuesday when Carolina plays at New Jersey.
