The Maple Leafs will need the veteran Marleau to start playing assertively since third-year stud Auston Matthews (shoulder) -- with whom he's occasionally played with at even strength -- will miss at least four weeks of action. Marleau has only registered 23 shots on goal through 12 games, which at least partially tells the story of why he's only scored once over that span. However, the silver lining is that the 39-year-old has averaged about 19 and a half minutes of ice time over the last two contests. As long as he continues to see playing time at or near season-high levels, Marleau should start to bust out of his slump.

Marleau posted two assists in Sunday's 7-6 overtime win versus Chicago.

Both happened to be primary helpers, with one coming on the game-winning marker in overtime. The 39-year-old veteran has yet to score this season but does have four assists in three games. Playing a top-six role in potentially the league's most dynamic offense, Marleau could wind up doing wonders for fantasy owners in 2018-19.

Fourth-year winger William Nylander remains at an impasse with the Maple Leafs when it comes to contract negotiations, otherwise, the top line might have a different look. Marleau scored 27 goals and 20 assists in his debut campaign with the Buds in 2017-18. Formerly with the Sharks, the 39-year-old hasn't missed a single game in 10 seasons, which is certain to attract conservative fantasy owners in all kinds of drafts.

Marleau lit the lamp twice in a 7-4 Game 7 loss to the Bruins on Wednesday.

Marleau did his best to try and help the Maple Leafs to victory, but his two tallies weren't enough. In his first season away from San Jose, the 38-year-old forward showed that he still had a little something left in his legs. He scored 27 goals for the second straight season, and it wouldn't be surprising to see him make another attempt to win that first Cup next season.

Marleau notched an assist and three shots on goal in 15:39 of ice time during Game 4 against the Bruins.

Marleau owns three points in the last two contests, but it didn't prevent the Maple Leafs from falling behind 3-1 in the series with a 3-1 loss to the Bruins on Thursday. He will attempt to add to his playoff total as Toronto travels to Boston for Game 5 with hopes of stealing the contest and returning home with a chance to force a Game 7.

Marleau scored two goals in Monday's 4-2 win over the Bruins in Game 3.

EDGE Analysis

Both his shots found the back of the net, while he also added four hits, two PIM and a plus-2 rating. Marleau's second goal of the night was the 70th playoff tally of his career, putting him in a tie with Steve Yzerman for 16th all-time. The veteran may need to stay hot if the Leafs are going to even the series at 2-2 on Thursday.

Marleau netted the Leafs' only goal in a 3-1 loss to the Jets on Saturday night.

Marleau has 26 goals in 79 games this season. He's been a consistent 26-goal, 46-point player in each of the last three seasons. And it's fair to think Marleau can replicate that next season, too.

It's his 15th, 20-goal season. Marleau has faced recent criticism in the Toronto market for his 2018 -- he has just nine points in 20 games since the calendar flipped. And seven of those points have come in his last four games. There will be a moment when Marleau's game falls of a cliff, but we're not sure he's hit that just yet.
