Kokko earned the first shutout of his AHL career with this effort. He's now 6-3-1 with a 3.36 GAA and an .895 save percentage over 11 outings this season as the Firebirds' primary netminder. He will likely spend most or all of 2025-26 with Coachella Valley, as the Kraken have opted to have three goalies on the NHL roster when fully healthy this season.

Kokko's demotion comes at the expense of Philipp Grubauer being recalled from the Firebirds in a corresponding move. Kokko was a second-round selection in the 2022 NHL Entry Draft, so he figures to be a big part of Seattle's future, provided he continues to develop at the AHL level.

Kokko played the final half of the game after a poor showing from Daccord early on. The Blues eased up significantly, but Kokko didn't exactly impress despite a limited workload. He was called up Monday to take on the backup role, though it's possible the Kraken continue to shuffle Kokko and Ales Stezka around to avoid having either of them sitting out too long. The Kraken's next game is Saturday against the Canucks, and with no back-to-backs over the next week, the 20-year-old Kokko may benefit from an assignment to AHL Coachella Valley to keep him in a playing rhythm.

Kokko's promotion is likely more about getting Ales Stezka, who was sent down to the minors in a corresponding move, some game action, as the Firebirds will play Wednesday and Friday against AHL Henderson and AHL San Diego, respectively. Meanwhile, the 20-year-old Kokko figures to serve as the backup to Joey Daccord versus St. Louis on Tuesday -- assuming the Kraken don't decide to reverse these two moves Tuesday.

The Kraken are participating in just their second ever entry draft and they badly need goaltending depth, but Kokko is still a surprising selection at this point. The Finnish netminder was ranked ninth among European goaltenders by NHL Central Scouting heading into the draft. Kokko spent last year playing for Karpat's U20 Jr. club in Finland, posting a 17-10-0 record, 2.06 GAA and .914 save percentage. Seattle will let Kokko marinate overseas for the next couple seasons, at a minimum.
