Niklas Backstrom allowed four goals on 25 shots in Minnesota's 4-2 loss to Pittsburgh Tuesday night. Although the Wild haven't scored many goals in support of him this season, Backstrom has played quite well. Unfortunately, that problem could continue for much of the season so fantasy players who have rostered Backstrom shouldn't bank on too many wins.

While he has yet to establish himself as an elite NHL goalie, he has an impressive history against the Penguins. He is 3-0-0 with a 1.62 goals-against average and .949 save percentage vs. Pittsburgh.

Backstrom is a very structured, calm and mentally tough goaltender that needs consistency from the players in front of him to be an elite goaltender in the NHL. There's no denying that Backstrom has been struggling for the past two seasons but so has the Minnesota Wild. He has fallen victim to a porous defensive team as well as a lack of offensive support. Backstrom is still very valuable to his team and should not be written off just yet. If the Wild can magically find a scoring touch (Dany Heatley?), he could provide excellent value as a high-end second goalie.

Niklas Backstrom was beaten three times on 44 shots Tuesday as the Wild dropped a third period lead en route to a 4-3 shootout loss to the Senators. It's hard to blame the goaltender for a result like this when the team was outshot by Ottawa during all three periods of regulation. Backstrom is coming off a poor fantasy season, which likely makes him a little underrated this year. He's somewhere in the middle of the second tier of fantasy netminders.

Niklas Backstrom stopped 12 of 14 shots in a 2-1 loss to the New York Islanders on Monday. Backstrom allowed two goals on nine shots in the first period. From that point onward, the Islanders managed only five shots on goal, but the damage was done. Backstrom's record is now 1-1-0 this season.

The acquisitions of Dany Heatley and Devin Setoguchi should remedy that, making Backstrom an excellent fantasy option once more.

Matt Hackett stopped all 14 shots in the third period to maintain the shutout as the Wild managed only one shot on the St. Louis net in the final stanza. This result is good news for Backstrom owners as he injured his knee earlier in training camp. He is the Wild's number one goalie with Josh Harding backing him up heading into the start of the season. He is a good second goalie in deeper pools.
