The Capitals will hope to have Schmidt back in action as soon as possible, as he's played well of late, notching two assists and five shots on goal in his last four games. Taylor Chorney will draw into the lineup for Wednesday's matchup with Toronto in Schmidt's absence, who will hope to return to action Friday against the Rangers.

While a multipoint game is a great achievement, the points also represent Schmidt's only offensive contributions in the month of December. While he has filled in admirably alongside John Carlson during Brooks Orpik's absence, Schmidt's lack of quality opportunities keep his value limited only to very deep leagues, as he has just six points in 29 games this season.

The Capitals had played the night before, so it's possible they just wanted a fresh body on the blue line for the back-to-back tilt. Still, Schmidt has had trouble staying in the Capitals lineup thus far in 2015-2016, and his fantasy upside will remain extremely limited until he can establish himself as a mainstay in the lineup.

Schmidt re-signed Wednesday with the Capitals on a two-year, $1.625 million contract, Alex Prewitt of the Washington Post reports. With Mike Green expected to depart as an unrestricted free agent this summer, Schmidt is expected to fill one of the six regular spots on defense for the Capitals. Schmidt's deal is of the one-way variety, meaning that he'll have to clear waivers first if the Capitals decide to send him back to AHL Hershey at any point. The 23-year-old has appeared in 68 games with the Capitals over the past two seasons, accruing three goals and seven assists.

Schmidt was recalled from AHL Hershey on an emergency basis Monday. The Capitals didn't provide an explanation for Schmidt's promotion, but it could be related to a possible injury for Tim Gleason, who was nursing an undisclosed ailment heading into Game 3 against the Rangers and may not be fully recovered. Schmidt was previously recalled for precautionary purposes in that instance, and it's possible the Capitals are just bringing the 23-year-old aboard as a safeguard once again in advance of Wednesday's Game 7.

Schmidt was reassigned to AHL Hershey On Tuesday. Schmidt was recalled to provide insurance for Tim Gleason (undisclosed), who ended up playing in Monday's Game 3 win over the Rangers. If another Washington blueliner suffers an injury during the playoffs, Schmidt will likely be the first choice to join the roster.
