Ellis was reassigned to AHL St. John's on Sunday.
EDGE Analysis
The 23-year-old defenseman got his first taste of the NHL, serving three games as the Canadiens' sixth defenseman. Ellis played very sheltered minutes during his stint, essentially erasing any chance he would have at producing offensively, but he has been a factor in the AHL (31 points in 56 games).

Ellis made his NHL debut in Wednesday night's 3-2 shootout loss to Anaheim. He skated on the third pair, registering two shots on goal and a two-minute penalty in 10:31 of ice time.
EDGE Analysis
Ellis, who had 12 goals and 31 points with St. John's in the American Hockey League prior to his call-up, has come a long way since being drafted in the fourth round of the 2010 draft. The 6-foot-1 blue-liner from Prince Edward Island spent some time with the Wheeling Nailers of the East Coast Hockey League (ECHL) last season before getting back to American Hockey League.

Ellis has been called up the Canadiens from St. John's of the American Hockey League, the Montreal Gazette reports.
EDGE Analysis
Ellis is having a career-year for himself for the IceCaps, with 12 goals and 31 points in 56 games. The 6-foot-1, 207-pounder was a fourth-round draft pick (117th overall) by the Canadiens in 2010. With the news that Nathan Beaulieu (lower body) will miss two-to-three weeks, Ellis will provide some depth initially, but could find regular minutes as the Canadiens evaluated its younger players over the final weeks of the season.

Ellis was recalled by Montreal on Monday, Renaud Lavoie of TVA Sports reports.
EDGE Analysis
The Canadiens have yet to announce a related move to make room for Ellis, although it would be surprising if the defenseman stayed in Montreal for extended time, given that he's yet to make his NHL debut. Although, the 23-year-old is having a solid season with AHL St. John's, accumulating 12 goals and 18 assists on 54 outings.

Canadiens prospect Morgan Ellis has been a great pickup for the QMJHL Shawinigan Cataractes.
Ellis was a midseason acquisition from the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles. When he joined Shawinigan, Ellis told his new coach, Eric Veilleux, that he'd be a shutdown defenseman. The coach recalled, "'Is that all?' I asked. He told me again that he was a shutdown guy, and I asked him: 'How about the power play? Weren't you on the power play in Cape Breton?' He didn't seem to have much confidence, but he's been very good for us. He's exceeded my expectations." Ellis did have a plus-21 rating in 26 contests with Shawinigan, but he was more than just a shutdown blueliner. He had eight goals and 27 points with the Cataractes. Ellis has signed an entry-level deal with Montreal and hopes to begin his pro career in 2012-13.
