When he joined Shawinigan, Ellis told his new coach, Eric Veilleux, that he'd be a shutdown defenseman. The coach recalled, "'Is that all?' I asked. He told me again that he was a shutdown guy, and I asked him: 'How about the power play? Weren't you on the power play in Cape Breton?' He didn't seem to have much confidence, but he's been very good for us. He's exceeded my expectations." Ellis did have a plus-21 rating in 26 contests with Shawinigan, but he was more than just a shutdown blueliner. He had eight goals and 27 points with the Cataractes. Ellis has signed an entry-level deal with Montreal and hopes to begin his pro career in 2012-13.
