Rantanen (upper body) took the ice for Wednesday's practice session in a non-contact sweater, Mike Chambers of The Denver Post reports.

While he hasn't been cleared for contact, the fact that Rantanen is back on the ice is a step in the right direction. Prior to getting hurt, the winger racked up 10 points in 11 contests, including five with the man advantage. Once cleared to play, Rantanen figures to bump Vladislav Namestnikov from his first-line role.

Rantanen will miss "weeks" with his upper-body injury, Ryan S. Clark of The Athletic reports.

Unfortunately, this news doesn't come as a surprise after Rantanen took a nasty spill into the boards behind the net during Monday's loss to the Lightning. He tallied a power-play assist before exiting the game, giving him 19 goals and 41 points in 42 contests this season. It's unclear how long Rantanen will be out, but a return before March appears to be out of the question. With only 11 healthy forwards on the roster, expect the Avalanche to make a roster move before Wednesday's game against the Islanders.

Rantanen left Monday's contest against the Lightning with an upper-body injury and will not return, Marc Moser of Altitude Sports 950 reports.

Around the midway point of the second period, Rantanen was tripped up near the Lightning net and went crashing into the boards shoulder-first. He was in obvious pain and went to the locker room immediately. An update on his status should be available before Wednesday's game against the Islanders, but it wouldn't be surprising to see the top-line winger miss some time.

For Rantanen, it was his 19th goal of the season and his 99th career goal. Coming off back-to-back 80-point campaigns, Rantanen has had his 2019-20 season interrupted by injury but has still produced at nearly a point-per-game clip. He has 39 points in 40 games heading into Saturday's tilt against the Kings.

Rantanen netted a goal on four shots and went plus-2 in Tuesday's 3-0 win over the Senators.

Rantanen scored the Avalanche's sixth goal 12:59 into the third period, when the game was already decided. The 23-year-old winger is on a four-game point streak, and he's still on a point-per-game pace this year with 36 points -- 11 with the man advantage -- through 35 games.

With that rating, Rantanen has dipped below the even mark for the season (minus-4), but the good news is he continues to score. Rantanen has 15 goals and 31 points in just 29 games despite fewer shots on net this season. At least in part, that's because Rantanen owns a 21.1 shooting percentage, which is five percent higher than last season's. With that in mind, owners should be wary of a scoring drought for Rantanen during the second half.

We don't know how long it will last, but like you, we hope as long as possible.
