The Coyotes took a 3-2 shootout loss in Anaheim Friday night because, their goaltender says, they were "scared to win."
"You ever heard of the saying scared to lose?" Smith said. "Well, we were scared to win and that's not how you finish off hockey games. Yeah, we were solid up to that point but we went out in the third period and we had six shots and we just let them come and come and come and when you give that team the chances we gave them, sooner or later it's going to end up in the back of the net." Smith made 37 saves in the game.

Mike Smith turned aside 37 of 39 shots in Coyotes' 4-3 shootout loss against the Ducks Friday night.
Smith played a great game for the Coyotes and couldn't do much for Ducks' goals. He now has 2.96 goal against average and .913 save percentage. Phoenix play again immediately on Saturday night so look for Thomas Greiss to start then against the Sharks.

Mike Smith stopped 28 of 32 shots as the Coyotes lost to the Senators 4-3 in OT Tuesday night.
Smith had a strong first period with 12 saves, but let a two-goal cushion slip away with some sloppy play around the net. Smith misplayed a puck behind the net and then got tangled up with teammate David Schlemko on his way back to the crease. Colin Greening collected the puck and fed Jason Spezza in the crease where he tied the game. Smith has now 3-2-1 record with .905 save percentage and 3.17 GAA. Thomas Greiss could get a shot between the pipes in next game for the Coyotes.

Mike Smith backstopped the Phoenix Coyotes to a 5-3 win against the Carolina Hurricanes on Sunday.
The 31-year-old workhorse might be getting back on track. He stopped 31 out of 34 shots, allowing two even-strength tallies and one power-play goal. It's worth noting that six of Smith's 14 goals allowed have been on the PK, so if Phoenix can get a little tighter there, that .911 save percentage might rise. Either way, he's a quality fantasy goalie if healthy.

Mike Smith was hung out to dry for much of Phoenix's 4-1 loss to San Jose on Saturday night.
Smith faced a whopping 50 shots and made 47 saves, so you can hardly say this one was his fault. Even more impressive for him was that he faced 18 shots in the first period and allowed three goals, staying perfect for the remainder of the game.

Mike Smith will get the nod for Phoenix versus San Jose Saturday night.
Smith has posted a 6-0-1 record in his last seven outings against the Sharks. Last year, he was 2-0-0 with a .985 save percentage and a 0.48 goals against average against them. He was very good in the Coyotes' regular-season opener in a victory against the Rangers.
