The Blue Jackets assigned Chaput to AHL Springfield on Tuesday. Mark Letestu will finally make his return to the Jackets' lineup on Tuesday after missing 28 consecutive games due to injury. As such, Columbus no longer needs Chaput to fill the void at center in Letestu's absence. Chaput has tallied five points through 33 games with the Jackets this season.

Chaput scored the first goal of his NHL career and racked up seven PIM in Thursday's overtime loss to Washington. He'd managed just five assists and no goals over his first 43 NHL games, but broke through at a pivotal moment Thursday, giving the Jackets a late 4-3 lead -- though they gave it back and went on to lose in overtime. As he sees fourth-line ice time and rarely so much as puts a shot on goal, there's not much fantasy value to be mined here.

The Blue Jackets recalled Chaput from AHL Springfield on Saturday, The Columbus Dispatch reports. Chaput will return to Columbus after spending the last two weeks in the AHL. He tallied five points in five games with Springfield, but notched just two assists and zero goals in 18 games with Columbus earlier this season.

With Ryan Johansen, Boone Jenner and Nathan Horton all now likely to miss the beginning of the regular season, Chaput stands a good chance of making the NHL roster and centering the fourth line, which would allow coach Todd Richards to use Mark Letestu higher up in the lineup. Chaput wouldn't have much fantasy upside in that role, but he was able to provide some offense last season in the AHL, and once he gets a foot in the door he has the grit and skill to earn Richards' trust.

Chaput scored a goal and added an assist in Tuesday's 2-0 exhibition win over the Penguins. Coming off a solid AHL campaign in which he scored 19 goals and 45 points in 55 games, Chaput isn't likely to break camp with the Blue Jackets but more strong preseason performances could put him at the front of the line for a callup when injuries hit.
