Over the last month of the regular season, Murray went 8-4-3 with a 2.26 GAA and .931 save percentage. He and the Penguins will look to bounce back in 2019-20 after being swept by the Islanders last postseason.

Murray played two periods of action before the reigns were turned over to Carter Hart to close out the game. The 24-year-old Murray's underwhelming performance was on par with his disappointing playoff performance in which he posted a subpar 3.02 GAA and .906 save percentage in four games versus the Islanders. Still, the Thunder Bay native should be the go to netminder for Canada heading into the 2019 IIHF World Championship.

While some will see this as an opportunity for Murray to work on his game in a competitive setting, others will see it as another chance for the oft-injured netminder to get hurt. Murray had an up and down season that once again saw him miss time due to injuries. The Thunder Bay native fell short of the 30-win mark by just one victory, while matching his career high four shutouts. Since taking over as the full-time No. 1 in Pittsburgh following the departure of Marc-Andre Fleury, the 24-year-old Murray has failed to impress the Penguins faithful and will no doubt face further scrutiny heading into the 2019-20 campaign.

Murray allowed two goals on 25 shots in a 3-1 loss to the Islanders in Game 4 on Tuesday. The Penguins lost their first-round matchup with the Islanders, 4-0.

EDGE Analysis

There's plenty of blame to go around when a team gets swept, but not much should head Murray's way. He was arguably the Penguins' best player in the series, and without him, the Penguins probably wouldn't have had a shot to win Games 1 and 4 late in regulation or overtime. Still, the numbers for Murray don't look particularly good. He posted just a .908 save percentage in the series and has lost eight of his last nine postseason starts dating back to last year.

Murray is slated to be between the pipes for Tuesday's Game 4 home tilt with the Islanders, Jason Mackey of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.

While the focus on the Pens' problems in the series has been on the lack of offensive contributions and defensive lapses, Murray hasn't exactly been stellar, as he is sporting a .902 save percentage and 3.33 GAA. If the netminder can step up his game, it could be the spark the rest of the lineup needs to avoid a first-round sweep.

The series now shifts to Pittsburgh on Sunday, but Murray may need to take matters into his own hands and deliver better than a merely solid performance if the club is going to climb out of its 2-0 hole.
