Ellis made his way into 356 NHL contests, having spent most of his time with the Sabres organization. He tried to keep it going with that same club by signing a PTO ahead of this season, but ultimately was released.

The 33-year-old never stood much of a chance at making the Sabres' Opening Night roster, so Thursday's move doesn't come as much of a shock. He'll open the season with AHL Rochester, where he will patiently await a contract offer from the Sabres in case they require the veteran's services at some point down the road.

Ellis signed a one-year AHL contract with the Rochester Americans on Thursday, Bill Hoppe of the Olean Times Herald reports. The 33-year-old played in 39 games with the Sabres last season, but was largely a non-factor, only managing to register two points over that span. What Ellis lacks in on-ice production he makes up for with veteran leadership, a quality he will bring to AHL Rochester in 2015-16.

Ellis recorded a goal and an assist in Wednesday's 4-3 win over the Maple Leafs. The points were the winger's first in 34 games with the Sabres this season, so the perennial depth forward isn't much of an option in most fantasy formats.

The Sabres have recalled Ellis from AHL Rochester, the team's official site reports. Ellis, who has recorded 13 points in 38 games AHL games to date, adds experience and depth up front, but he's off the fantasy radar in his depth role with the Sabres.

Ellis was assigned to AHL Rochester on Monday. Ellis played in each of the last four games since joining the team Jan. 13, but recorded a minus-one rating in each of the games and didn't get himself into the box score other than putting three shots on net. His assignment to the AHL could signify the impending return of Cody McCormick.

Ellis was reaclled from AHL Rochester on Tuesday. The Sabres have a few banged-up forwards, so the 33-year-old Ellis will help with depth. He has 47 points (20 goals) in 317 career NHL appearances, but he hasn't played in an NHL game this season.

Ellis was waived by the Sabres on Tuesday. He'll be assigned to AHL Rochester once he clears waivers. Ellis managed to suit up for 50 games with the Sabres last season, so Tuesday's cut doesn't necessarily mean he won't resurface with the big club later this season.

Matt Ellis scored the only Buffalo goal in a 4-1 loss to Minnesota Thursday. The goal was just the second of the campaign for Ellis, who offers no fantasy value. Mike Weber and Tyler Ennis drew the assists on the marker.
