Weegar inked a one-year, two-way contract with Florida on Thursday.
EDGE Analysis
Weegar saw action in three outings with the Panthers last season in which he averaged just 17:27 of ice time and failed to secure a point. The defenseman was able to put together a solid minor-league campaign as he registered 14 goals and 22 helpers in 60 outings. Florida is not particularly deep on the blue line, which could open the door for Weegar to earn his way onto the 23-man roster during training camp.

Weegar was brought up from AHL Springfield on Monday, Harvey Fialkov of the Sun Sentinel reports.
EDGE Analysis
The young defender's recall is the second of his career, though he's yet to make his NHL debut. Whether or not he cracks the lineup for Monday's matchup with Montreal remains to be seen, but he's been fairly productive in the minors this season, logging 13 goals and 32 points in 57 games.

Weegar was reassigned to AHL Springfield on Tuesday.
EDGE Analysis
With Aaron Ekblad returning from his concussion Tuesday, there is no space on the roster for Weegar and he will head back to the minors without having drawn into the lineup during Ekblad's four-game absence. The 23-year-old blueliner isn't likely to be a breakout fantasy player for the end of this season, but he's seemingly got his feet under him now and could be one to watch next season.

Weegar will be recalled from AHL Springfield on Monday, George Richards of the Miami Herald reports.
EDGE Analysis
With Panthers interim coach Tom Rowe confirming that blueliner Aaron Ekblad suffered a concussion Saturday against the Lightning, the big club will bring Weegar aboard in order to restore some depth on the back end. A seventh-round pick in 2013, Weegar has yet to make his NHL debut, but could see the ice in Tuesday's game against the Maple Leafs. Weegar has been a standout performer with Springfield this season, posting 12 goals and 29 points in 51 games to earn AHL All-Star honors.

Florida general manager Dale Tallon sees offensive defenseman MacKenzie Weegar running the Panthers' power play sooner or later. Weegar scored 103 points in 123 games in his two seasons with the Halifax Mooseheads of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League. Although Weegar has made strides, recent events suggest he might have to wait a while to become part of the Panthers' plans. The team re-signed Dmitry Kulikov and Dylan Olsen recently. Erik Gudbranson was just given a two-year deal while veterans such as Brian Campbell and the recently acquired Willie Mitchell are expected to lead the group. Once No. 1 pick Aaron Ekblad is signed, the Panthers could conceivably have their six defensemen wrapped up before training camp starts in a few months. "I think I was a little bit more positionally sound," said Weegar, 20, who was the Panthers' last pick in the 2013 NHL Draft. "There are still a lot more things to improve on. I haven't skated much this summer. We still have a few more months left before the big camp and I'll show up better."

MacKenzie Weegar has inked an entry-level contract with the Florida Panthers. "We are pleased to have reached a contract agreement with MacKenzie," GM Dale Tallon said. "He is a young and mobile defenseman with an offensive upside, who will continue to grow and develop at the professional level." He recorded 12 goals and 59 points in 61 games Halifax in the QMJHL this past season. He also added 22 points in 16 playoff contests. The Panthers selected MacKenzie in the seventh round of the 2013 draft.
