The high-scoring defenseman will certainly be missed if he misses an extended amount of time, as he's tallied 39 points in 55 games so far this year. More information about his injury should come out after the game, but with the Penguins playing Friday night against the Blue Jackets, his status should be outlined before the puck drops in Columbus at the latest.

Schultz registered two assists, two shots on net, two blocked shots, three hits, a minor penalty and a plus-1 rating during Friday's rout of the Hurricanes.

The contributions in the blocked shots, hits, and PIM columns are a nice bonus because Schultz has emerged as an elite scorer from the blue line. He's up to an incredible seven goals, 27 points and 41 shots over his past 23 games and is a must-own fantasy asset. With Kris Letang (lower body) on injured reserve, Schultz projects to continue providing a high offensive floor quarterbacking the No. 1 power-play unit. Additionally, Schultz's salary in daily contests still offers some room for profit.

Three of the rearguard's four apples came in a crazy six-goal second period by the Pens, while his last helper of the night came in overtime on Connor Sheary's game-winning tally. The former Oiler is having a huge first full season in Steeltown, as he's now up to 30 points and a sparkling plus-22 rating in just 43 games.

Schultz didn't miss a beat following Pittsburgh's bye week, pocketing a power-play assist in a 6-2 win over the Lightning on Sunday.

He saw nearly as much time on the man advantage (2:30) as did Kris Letang (2:35), a good sign. In addition to his helper, Schultz blocked three shots and registered two of his own. He's having a career year with seven goals and 25 points in 39 contests. Remarkably, he sits atop of the NHL with a plus-24 rating (tying him with Ryan Suter) after compiling a minus-78 in parts of four seasons with Edmonton.

Schultz, who collected an assist Saturday, leads all NHL defensemen in scoring for the month of December with six goals and 12 assists.

EDGE Analysis

Despite the return of Kris Letang, Schultz played the point on Pittsburgh's top power-play unit late in the third period. He's bumped up his value during Letang's seven-game absence and coach Mike Sullivan has no problem sticking with hot players. It remains to be seen whether Schultz can keep up his blistering pace heading into the new calendar year, however.
