UPDATE: Minnesota signed RW Jason Pominville to a 5-year contract extension. If I were playing on a line with Mikko Koivu and Zach Parise, I'd sign on the dotted line too. After seeing his former team, the Buffalo Sabres, play last night against Detroit, he may be happier than ever with a new contract....Boston signs solid D-man Dennis Seidenberg to a 4-year extension....ALL UPDATED IN THE GUIDE ALREADY!!!
THE ROAD LESS TRAVELLED--With the Detroit Red Wings moving into the Eastern Conference, people have been saying how the competition is tougher in the East. I say that the perennial powerhouse Red Wings will benefit from not having to travel across multiple time zones so many times across a full NHL season just to play a game. All that travel takes its toll on one's body and mental toughness. You could reasonably expect better than average numbers from the Detroit players this season because of this factor, and you will probably notice the difference in their level of play as the season progresses. Detroit finished in the middle of the pack last season in terms of Power Play ranking. By the looks of last night's game, they are gunning for the top spot in that category as they sported a 1st power play unit of Daniel Alfredsson and Niklas Kronwall at the points with Johan Franzen, Henrik Zetterberg and Pavel Datsyuk rounding out the unit. Although they were held off the board in last night's game, this group looks lethal.
More Game Notes: NEW SEASON, NEW PLAYERS, NEW BEGINNINGS--New acquisition G Jonathan Bernier looked very solid in net for the Toronto Maple Leafs as he turned away 31 of 32 shots on goal to earn the road victory against Steve Mason and the Philadelphia Flyers. Bernier has stepped out from behind Jonathan Quick's shadow in Los Angeles and now battles James Reimer for playing time in TO. Bernier raised the bar with last night's solid effort. Mason, who was acquired at the trade deadline last season, and Bernier are trying to prove to their teams that ...

Along with the 2 goals, he took 3 SOG and had 2 Hits and 1 Blocked Shot. Goalie Start: James Reimer starts Game 1 for the Maple Leafs. dailyfaceoff.com Tue 10/1/13 2:56 PM
Reimer went 19-8-5 with a 2.46 GAA and .924 SV% last season and played great in his first career playoff appearance. He was the better of the two goalies in the preseason, thus he starts opening night. He will split time with Jonathan Bernier this season, limiting his value, but behind a good Leafs team he should be able to stockpile a lot of wins.
Goalie Start: It sounds like the Maple Leafs plan is for Reimer to ... dailyfaceoff.com Tue 10/1/13 12:56 AM
We already know that the two are going to split each of the first two games, but for now Reimer is the likely starter for the season opener. Bernier is a native of Quebec, but Reimer has been the better of the two goalies in camp. We will await for the official word, which will come tomorrow. For now consider Reimer "likely".

Ryan O'Reilly collected two goals and an assist in the 4-3 victory over Los Angeles, quickly asserting himself as a viable fantasy option, as he has been shifted to left wing on Colorado's top line during camp. Playing a regular shift with arguably the two most talented Avalanche forwards, Matt Duchene and P.A. Parenteau, will provide a decent spike to his numbers. On the rise.. Not a great debut for St. Louis goalie Jaroslav Halak, who stumbled in his first start by allowing 4 goals on 23 shots in the 4-3 loss to Tampa Bay. With Brian Elliott and even Jake Allen ready to pounce, Halak's standing as the Blue's no. 1 backstopper is tenuous at best. If you draft him, you might need to consider adding Elliott fairly early.. I don't love Tampa's new free agent addition Valtteri Filppula, but he should be locked in as the second-line center with Vincent Lecavalier out of town. The underachieving Swede dished out three assists last night, but he will require a healthy dose of power-play time to get close to the 60-pt. range in '13-14.
Training Camp Update: All signs points to Claude Giroux being available for Philadelphia's season opener, as the star center might be playing in Tuesday's preseason game.. Boston's Patrice Bergeron has received medical clearance to play in today's exhibition game. Can fantasy owners expect him to return to his 70+ point days? Only injuries could hold him back.. News from Toronto is that forward Nazem Kadri's x-rays on an apparent hand injury turned out negative. Expect him ready to go when the real games begin.. Is Leaf goalie Jonathan Bernier banged up? Despite stopping 10 of 11 shots on Thursday, he complained of an undisclosed injury. Coach Randy Carlyle is referring to it as a "knee irritation". Obviously, if anything happens to Bernier, James Reimer's fantasy value skyrockets. Just like that!

ROMIE HITS THE POST: TORONTO FOR STARTERS;JAMES REIMER OR JONATHAN ... primepucks.com Thu 9/5/13 11:36 PM
The Toronto Maple Leafs suprised everyone with their trade for goaltender Jonathan Bernier from the Los Angeles Kings during the offseason. They sent forward Matt Frattin (a third line type player), backup goalie Ben Scrivens and a conditional second round pick for Bernier. Their starter, James Reimer, had a very good year with a 19-8-5 record, a 2.46 goals against average, a .924 save percentage and 4 shutouts. Reimer helped Toronto to make the playoffs, and he played well in the playoffs until Game 7 against Boston in the first round. With the Maple Leafs up 4-1 late in the third period, Reimer had a classic meltdown allowing 3 goals, and then giving up the winning goal in overtime to Patrice Bergeron. Despite that, his playoff numbers were not all that bad with a 2.88 goals against average and a .923 save percentage. But it appears that the way they lost in Game 7 has Toronto questioning their number one goalie, which led to rumors that the Leafs were trying to get Roberto Luongo from Vancouver. Bernier was a less expensive option, although with less experience as he was the backup to Jonathan Quick and only played in 14 games last season. However, even playing in a handful of games, he did manage to sport impressive numbers with a 9-3-1 record, a sparkling 1.88 goals against average, a .922 save percentage and one shutout.
Both Reimer and Bernier are only 25 years old, and neither has a lot of NHL experience, with Reimer playing in 104 games and Bernier in 62 games. Their career save percentages are pretty similar with Reimer at .915 and Bernier at .912. At their ages, they can both get better. Toronto General Manager Dave Nonis has indicated that the starting job is open for competition, and that "when you win your in".
Neither player has had a big workload yet in the NHL, with the most games that Reimer has played in the NHL in one season is 37 games, while Bernier's is 25 games with the Kings in the 2010-2011 season. There are size issues also, as Bernier is 5'11 and 185 pounds, while Reimer is 6'2" and 208 pounds. Bernier is the more solid fundamental player as he positions himself well, squares up against the shooter, and plays the puck well. He plays a hybrid style, and as he has said, "he tries to stay on his feet as long as he can", while Reimer is more of a butterfly goalie. There are questions about Bernier's glove hand while Reimer tends to give up too many rebounds.
There are also financial considerations as Reimer is a ...

Goalie Start: Reimer vs. Rask in Game 7. dailyfaceoff.com Mon 5/13/13 2:56 PM
Reimer's playoff legacy continued to grow in Toronto last night. The 25-year-old netminder stopped 29 of 30 shots in the 2-1 win that froced Game 7 tonight in Boston. He has the 12th ranked GAA (2.58) and 8th ranked SV% (.932) in the playoffs. However none of that really matters in a Game 7, anything can happen.
