Oettinger turned aside 39 of 40 shots to help AHL Texas to a 5-1 win over Milwaukee on Tuesday.

It was easily one of Oettinger's best performances of the young season. Like most first-year pro goaltenders, Oettinger's play has been up and down. His numbers aren't pretty (2-5-2, 3.11 GAA, .904 save percentage) but his talent is evident every single time you watch him play. With Ben Bishop aging and seemingly injured all the time, and Anton Khudobin nothing more than a stopgap option, Oettinger could find himself playing meaningful games for Dallas sooner rather than later.

Oettinger will start in goal and play the first two periods of Thursday's preseason game against Colorado, Sean Shapiro of The Athletic reports.

Oettinger spent the majority of the 2018-19 campaign with Boston University, but turned pro following the collegiate season, posting a 3-3-1 record while registering a 2.47 GAA and .895 save percentage in six appearances with AHL Texas. The 2017 first-round pick will likely spend the entirety of the 2019-20 campaign in the minors splitting starts with Landon Bow.

Making his professional debut on Saturday, Oettinger stopped 23 of 24 shots in AHL Texas's 4-1 victory over Iowa.

With nothing left to prove at the collegiate level after three successful seasons at Boston University, Oettinger elected to forgo his final season of eligibility and sign his entry-level deal with the Stars. Oettinger plays a calm, composed game and could move quickly through the Dallas system. Oettinger has played considerably better than his 4-7-2 record would indicate. He could easily decide to turn pro after this season as opposed to playing a fourth and final year of collegiate hockey.

Like the rest of his teammates, Oettinger has been inconsistent this season. The Terriers are icing an extremely young team in 2017-18 and they are struggling to defend at times. The end result is Oettinger sporting a 4-6-1 record to this point to go along with a 2.91 GAA and .904 save percentage. One thing that Oettinger has on his side is guaranteed playing time. He has started every single game for BU and that trend if going to continue moving forward. Better days are ahead for the talented sophomore goaltender.
