The 30-year-old McCabe had gone seven games without a point coming into Saturday's contest. He's up to five goals, 19 points, 132 hits and 82 blocked shots through 47 games this season.

With the empty-net goal, the 30-year old has already tied the most goals in his career with four and with 17 total points on the year he looks to surpass the most points he's had in a season when he gained 22 in Chicago in 2021-22.

McCabe has five points over his last five games, another productive run for the usually defensive-minded blueliner. He's chipped in more regularly since the start of December -- 13 of his 15 points this year have come in his last 20 contests. The three points were a season high for the veteran blueliner, continuing a scoring surge that has seen McCabe collect two goals and 12 points over the last 16 contests. However, he had only two points in 16 games before that, and despite his current form he's been unable to work his way into a consistent spot on the power play. The Maple Leafs' offense is potent enough to keep supporting players like McCabe being productive in spurts, but don't be afraid to cut him loose once he cools down.

He also has 19 hits and 11 shots in that span. McCabe's scoring outburst has been unusual -- he had just two assists in 16 games prior, and his best output ever (25 points) came last season, split between Chicago and Toronto. McCabe is at his best when he provides stability for a more roving, offensive partner, so count on hits and blocks going forward as the Maple Leafs' blue line starts to stabilize. Mark Giordano has been activated off LTIR, which will presumably lead to pair changes.

We're not convinced this will last -- his best offensive season came last year when he put up a combined 25 points (three goals, 22 assists) between Chicago and Toronto. McCabe was brought into Toronto for his edge and grit, not his offense. There's no need to roster him at this time.
