Larkin was named team captain of the Red Wings on Wednesday, Ansar Khan of MLive.com reports.

Larkin has drawn serious praise for his competitiveness and leadership traits since the Wings selected him 15th overall in the 2014 NHL Entry Draft. As noted by Khan, the Michigan-born pivot becomes the 37th captain in franchise history, and the "C" gets stitched onto Larkin's sweater at the young age of 24. The consummate professional should be excited for a clean slate after a tumultuous finish to the 2019-20 campaign that saw the Wings finish last in the league with a 17-49-5 record. Over the course of his five-year career, Larkin has fashioned 107 goals and 159 assists between 389 contests.

Larkin put up 19 goals and 53 points in 71 games prior to the league's pause of play in mid-March.

Despite leading the Wings in points, it's been something of a disappointing season for the fifth-year NHLer. Larkin's well off last year's 32-goal, 73-point pace. Also, his minus-21 rating stands out as a black mark even though it's not actually his worst performance in that regard (minus-28 in 2016-17). It's no secret that Detroit is rebuilding and doesn't have many exciting NHL assets at the moment outside of Larkin, so we expect he'll be just fine in the long run as the team improves. In the meantime, owners can't be blamed for feeling underwhelmed with the 23-year-old's output.

Larkin scored a goal and added two assists, one on the power play, in Sunday's 5-4 shootout win over the Lightning.

He also beat Curtis McElhinney in the shootout. The Wings' top line was the story of the afternoon, as Larkin, Tyler Bertuzzi and Anthony Mantha accounted for all but one of the team's points. Larkin posted an assist, two shots on goal and four hits in Friday's 2-1 win over the Blackhawks.

The 23-year-old center has added 213 shots with a minus-23 rating -- Larkin remains the centerpiece of the Red Wings' offense.

Larkin snagged an assist, three shots on net and two hits in Monday's 2-1 loss to the Avalanche.

Larkin has been strong in his last seven games, during which he's netted three goals and supplied six helpers. The 23-year-old center has 49 points (18 tallies, 31 assists), 211 shots and 39 PIM in 68 appearances this year. Few Red Wings have made an impact offensively in 2019-20, but Larkin leads the team in points.

Detroit remains the cellar dweller of the entire league, but Larkin's on top of his game based on an active four-game point streak comprised of two goals and four helpers. The natural-born leader will look to stay hot in Thursday's home clash with the Wild.

The 23-year-old won't approach his 32 goals or 73 points of a year ago, but he's provided a respectable 17 goals and 45 points in 64 games for the last place Wings.

Larkin collected two assists in a 4-3 win over Montreal on Tuesday.

After four games without a point, Larkin's name showed up twice Tuesday, giving the 23-year-old 42 points in 62 games. His 23:23 of ice time versus the Canadiens broke a streak of three straight games playing less than 20 minutes. This was Larkin's second multi-point performance this month.

Larkin picked up his 25th assist of the season in Sunday's 3-1 win over the Bruins.

The Bruins tried to rip the puck away from Larkin while he was pinned against the boards, but the fleet-footed pivot managed to slip the biscuit to Tyler Bertuzzi, who ultimately telegraphed a slick cross-ice pass to Andreas Athanasiou for the go-ahead goal. After teasing a points-per-game pace early in the season, Larkin sits at 15 goals and 40 points through 57 games.
