Penner has an assist and a plus-3 rating in two games.

There has been no word on how Selanne being benched will shake up the Ducks' lines, but my best guess would be we will see Penner on Ryan Getzlaf and Corey Perry's line.

Penner was given a great chance to succeed when he was reunited with his former line-mates Ryan Getzlaf and Corey Perry in the preseason. However, Ducks head coach Bruce Boudreau was less than impressed with how Penner performed. Boudreau is likely trying to send a message to the 31-year-old winger.

"He'll never have a greater opportunity to play with players of the caliber of Ryan and Corey. It's all up to him," Boudreau said. "We want it to work. But in the end, he's going to have to be the one that produces and shows that he deserves to be on that line." Penner found himself on a line with Matt Beleskey and Rickard Rakell this morning which suggests that his time with Perry and Getzlaf may be over.

The New York Rangers had a good night in beating the Flyers 3-2 because of Center Derick Brassard who had two goals and looked good last night. Brassard came over to New York in the Marian Gaborik trade last year and has seemed very much in place in New York. He could score 60 points this year depending on the ice time he gets.  Don't forget about him late in your draft....Young forward Sean Courtier had a goal for Philadelphia, and he is probably off most poolies radar, but we have high expectations for him, and think he can score 65+ points this season....Steve Mason had 20 saves in goal, so watch this situation as he is competing with Ray Emery for the starter's job in Philadelphia. It should be a tough fight....Marcus Foligno had 2 goals last night for Buffalo against a Columbus split squad. At 22, Foligno has not yet established himself in the NHL but he has offensive talent, so he could be a real sleeper.  He once scored 13 points in 14 games in 2011-2012....Young Mikhail Grigorenko had a goal for Buffalo. Keep an eye on this kid because he has tremendous upside potential....The other Columbus squad beat Minnesota 3-1. Niklas Backstrom had only 7 saves in goal for the Wild while allowing all 3 goals. His performance will be critical to Minnesota this year....Forward Nino Niederreiter scored the only goal for the Wild on the power play, and he did not look bad. He was a tremendous bust for the Islanders but now has a new life in Minnesota.  He is only 20 years old....Corey Crawford was in midseason form in goal for Chicago as he stopped all 19 shots he faced, as the Blackhawks shut out Detroit....Patrick Sharp had a goal for Chicago and he should get 30+ goals this season. The guy is very dependable....Defenseman Dennis Wideman had two goals last night for Calgary in a split squad game against the Islanders, but please don't expect that to happen a lot as this team is most likely going to struggle this year. He is at best a late round draft pick....Forward Curtis Glencross had a goal and two assists. We view him as a marginal pick....Michael Grabner had a goal for New York and he has a lot of ability.  If he could only play with more consistency.... Kevin Poulin had 14 saves out of 16 shots for the Islanders and is fighting Nabokov for the starter's job in New York. We expect Nabokov to win this battle....In a split squad game Calgary beat the Islanders 4-2.  John Tavares and Matt Moulson both scored for New York. Expect them both to have big years...

More Tryouts: G Tim Thomas and RW Damien Brunner have signed tryout agreements with the Florida Panthers and New Jersey Devils,respectively. Both team can use their talents but I don't see why the players chose these teams unless there was very little interest elsewhere.  Keep an eye on both situations as both could be decent contributors on needy teams. Its looking like he will be lining up with Jason Spezza and Ryan, so this Senator trio could be dynamite in fantasy leagues... Another guy who just needs to stay healthy is defenseman James Wisniewski, who had a nice night for the Blue Jackets with a goal and an assist against Pittsburgh. With the added firepower in Columbus, the hard-shooting blueliner could make a serious push for 45-50 points, but he will come in undervalued in most drafts. He could be a huge bargain, so keep your eye on how he performs in camp. Training Camp Update: Anaheim's second line in the early going consists of Nick Bonino centering Teemu Selanne and Jakub Silfverberg. For now Dustin Penner stays on the top line.. Erik Cole has been a scoring dud in his short time in Dallas, but he will reportedly get a shot on the top line with Tyler Seguin and Jamie Benn. Interesting. If that doesn't get him back to 30+ goals, nothing will... Cory Schneider will be getting the first start for the New Jersey Devils in pre-season action. There are indications that Penner could play on the top line effectively making him a deep fantasy option in the upcoming season.

PENNER SIGNS WITH ANAHEIM: According to Eric Stephens of the Orange County Register, RW Dustin Penner and the Anaheim Ducks have agreed to a one-year/$2 million contract. Keep in mind that the 30-year old was a complete bust for the Los Angeles Kings, collecting just 37 points in 117 combined games. His last productive NHL season was in 2009-10, when he set career highs with 31 goals and 63 points for Edmonton. Although Penner has tons of offensive potential, he hasn't been able to develop a consistent scoring touch. Don't overrate him in your fantasy drafts, but any chance of Penner having a comeback season would depend on whether he can land on the top line with Ryan Getzlaf and Corey Perry. With Bobby Ryan traded away and Teemu Selanne possibly not returning, Coach Boudreau might prefer to have Penner, a veteran presence, on the second line with up-and-coming youngster Nick Bonino. Monitor this situation during training camp, but don't expect too much from this over-hyped forward.
