Smith-Pelly announced his retirement from the NHL on Friday, NBC Sports Washington reports.

He won the Stanley Cup with the Capitals in 2018 while contributing seven goals and eight points in 24 playoff games. In 2021-22, he had four goals and eight points in 24 contests with AHL Laval.

AHL Laval extended Smith-Pelly's professional tryout Monday, Pat Hickey of the Montreal Gazette reports.

Smith-Pelly hasn't played in the NHL since 2019 and bounced around since then, trying out for the Flames, playing in the KHL, and hooking up with AHL Ontario for 14 games last season.

However, he managed just eight points in 54 regular-season games the following year, so he'll look to fine-tune his game for another shot in the NHL next season.

Smith-Pelly was released by the Flames on Saturday.

Still, rest assured that no loyal fan of the Caps has forgotten about the fiery winger's heroics from 2018, when he scored seven goals -- including a pair of game-winning tallies -- on a 24.1 shooting percentage en route to the franchise's first-ever Stanley Cup win. He's back in the picture with T.J. Oshie (upper body) out for an extended period of time.

It remains unknown whether Smith-Pelly will report to AHL Hershey given that he can be recalled after the roster limit is lifted following Monday's trade deadline. In any event, the 26-year-old's fantasy value is virtually non-existent in the short term having managed just four goals and eight points in 54 games and with competition for a lineup spot even more intense following the acquisition of Carl Hagelin from the Kings on Thursday.
