Stepan will be a game-time decision for Thursday's game against the Coyotes, Steve Zipay of Newsday reports.

Stepan had a wisdom tooth extracted Wednesday, but also had two screws removed from his jaw that remained from a procedure he underwent in 2014 to address his broken jaw. The latter procedure has apparently left him in a fair amount of pain, which is why he is officially a game-time decision for Thursday's tilt against Arizona. His availability will be confirmed prior to puck drop Thursday night.

Stepan missed practice Wednesday due to having his wisdom teeth extracted, but head coach Alain Vigneault indicated that he "should be fine for tomorrow (Thursday)" against the Coyotes.

EDGE Analysis

Assuming nothing unforeseen happens during the minor procedure, it seems highly unlikely Stepan will miss Thursday's contest. Emerson Etem took his place on the top line during Wednesday's practice, and would draw into the lineup should Stepan be forced out.

Stepan scored the team's lone goal in Sunday's loss to the Devils.

Stepan has gotten off to a fast start, collecting four points through the first six contests. Though it's still early, three goals in that span has the 25-year-old well on pace to easily surpass his current career high of 21, set in his rookie season five years ago.

That's a modest two-game point streak to start the season on. Not all that surprising from the Minnesota native who has been progressively inched his way to a point-per-game pace each season he has logged in the NHL. Although linemates Kevin Hayes and Chris Kreider seem to have yet to hit high gear, the season is still young and think you will be pleased with Stepan's production once they do shake the early season rust.

Stepan scored a goal on three shots in Wednesday's season-opening 3-2 win over the Blackhawks.

The goal came on a tip-in late in the first period and subsequently turned out to be the winner. Considering the veteran center has eclipsed the 20-goal plateau just once in his last five seasons, you should probably expect these nights to be few and far between, but with second-line center duties, the 25-year-old should dish out enough assists to end up with at least 55 points this season.

New York Rangers center Derek Stepan signed a six-year, $39 million contract extension on Monday, according to ESPN. Stepan, who totaled 16 goals and 39 assists in 68 games as the Rangers' top-line center last season, will be under contract through the 2020-21 season. The $6.5 million annual average will make the 25-year-old one of the highest-paid players in the league, and the agreement was reportedly reached with relative ease. “For the most part, both sides were pretty close from the beginning, but something like this takes time,” Stepan said Monday. “I think we’re both very comfortable and very happy with this. It went the way I expected it to and wanted it to. I think Jeff [Gorton, the Rangers’ general manager] did a great job. There wasn’t any bad blood through the whole thing. Hats off to him and my agent [Matt Oates].”

Stepan collected two assists in Wednesday's 6-5 OT loss to the Lightning. The center has been red hot lately, racking up eight points in his last six games. He now has five goals and seven assists through 15 playoff games, but will face a stiff test in Game 4 with his team down 2-1 in the series.

Stepan broke a scoreless tie with just 12.7 seconds left in the second period of Saturday's Eastern Conference opener. He picked up a rebound and ripped it past the Lightning's Ben Bishop. Bishop has just lost his stick in a melee at the net when a Rangers shot went off Bolts' defender Andrej Sustr. The puck went right to Stepan, who got rid of it quickly. It was his fourth goal of the postseason and extended his current point streak to four games and five points, including two goals.

Stepan buried the overtime game winner in Wednesday's 2-1 win over the Capitals. The center pounced on a rebound 11:24 into the overtime period, and wristed it past a sprawling Braden Holtby to send the Caps home for the summer. Stepan now has three goals and eight points through 12 playoff games this year, but none bigger than Wednesday's series clincher.

Stepan dished out a pair of helpers in Friday's Game 5 overtime win over the Capitals. While Stepan is yet to score in the second round, the 24-year-old has collected three assists and fired 13 shots on goal. He's got six points in these playoffs, which isn't awful, but it's also not mind-blowing. With 35 points (12 goals) in 71 career playoff games, Stepan has never been a big postseason performer, but his clutch assist in overtime Friday could be a sign of things to come.
