David Clarkson has agreed to join the Toronto Maple Leafs on a seven-year deal worth $36.75 million. His new contract also has a limited no-trade and no-move clause. Clarkson, who is a Toronto native, brings grit, character and scoring to the Leafs. He generated 15 goals, 24 points and 78 penalty minutes in 48 games last season with the Devils.

Although David Clarkson is on the brink of becoming an unrestricted free agent, he hasn't ruled out the possibility of staying with the New Jersey Devils. "David's contract ended on the 30th [of June] and [now] teams can call and say what they think of David," Clarkson's agent, Pat Morris said. "We've got an open mind with New Jersey and we've got an open mind with NHL clubs." Devils GM Lou Lamoriello said he made a "substantial offer" on Sunday, but it was not agreed on.

There is no change regarding the the status of David Clarkson and a deal with the Devils, according to general manager Lou Lamoriello. The Devils made the pending unrestricted free agent a "substantial offer" on Sunday, but nothing has gone on since then. The GM wouldn't say whether he'd send another offer Clarkson's way prior to the start of the signing period on noon Friday. Clarkson finished with 15 goals and 24 points this season.

New Jersey Devils GM Lou Lamoriello says the team made pending free agent David Clarkson a "substantial offer." Clarkson appears set to hit the free-agent market, which likely means his time with the Devils is over. "We have no other choice right now," Clarkson's agent, Pat Morris, said Monday. "On Sunday at the draft, the day David's contract expired, we received a proposal from Lou. Unfortunately it did not result in a contract." As of 12:01 a.m. on Wednesday, Clarkson was officially allowed to begin speaking with other teams, although Morris did add he expects another offer from Lamoriello before free agency officially opens Friday

The New Jersey Devils and David Clarkson could not come to an agreement before his contract expired at midnight Monday, according to TSN's Bob McKenzie. The Devils reportedly made Clarkson a contract offer before midnight, but he declined to accept it. Clarkson will become a free agent Friday but is eligible to begin talking to teams Wednesday. Devils GM Lou Lamoriello said previously he would prefer to re-sign Clarkson before free agency, which makes us wonder if he's played his last game as a Devil. Clarkson should garner plenty of interest in free agency after scoring 45 goals combined in the last two seasons.

David Clarkson thinks he'll end up testing the unrestricted free agent waters on July 5. Clarkson is still open to re-signing with the Devils, but he feels that they haven't provided him with a sufficiently substantial offer yet. From a fantasy standpoint, he'll provide you with about a penalty minute per game while contributing a fair bit offensively. He had 30 goals in 2011-12 and then 15 goals in 48 contests last season.

David Clarkson's agent, Pat Morris, expects to speak with New Jersey GM Lou Lamoriello during the draft. "I'm continuing my dialogue with Lou," Morris said. "We haven't gotten to economic specifics at all. It's Lou trying to say the team will be in good shape and David can eliminate that worry from his mindset. David is digesting that information and we'll go to the next phase if we can go to the next phase with it which is, hopefully, being able to listen to an economic position from New Jersey." The fact that they haven't talked about dollars yet could be concerning with free agency just a week away. Any snag in the negotiation process could lead to Clarkson testing the market as an unrestricted free agent.

David Clarkson said he isn't thinking about free agency yet and he's still in discussions with the New Jersey Devils about an extension. eyeing "I know my agent and Mr. Lamoriello have been talking, but I don't think they've gotten too deep into specifics yet," Clarkson said. "Right now, I'm just waiting to see what happens. I'll probably know more after the next few days." If there's no progress during that time then Clarkson said his focus may shift to free agency by the end of the weekend.

Devils general manager Lou Lamoriello remains committed to bringing back David Clarkson. Clarkson, who had 15 goals and nine helpers this season, is set to be an unrestricted free agent. "We'll do everything we can to sign him," Lamoriello said. "We're not looking to do anything else."

According to a source, the New Jersey Devils haven't spoken about numbers yet in their contract talks with potential UFA David Clarkson. The Devils have talked with their list of pending unrestricted free agents, which includes Patrik Elias, Dainius Zubrus, Marek Zidlicky and Peter Harrold, but the discussions apparently have not gone beyond preliminary stages.
