Sprong racked up 28 goals this season, putting him just four markers back for the AHL lead. Adding 29 helpers, the winger is just shy of a point per game pace (.97) and won't be long for the minors. Look for the youngster to crack the Pens' lineup coming out of training camp this fall.

After skating in eight straight games -- including an impressive two goal, one assist outburst Jan. 5 against the Islanders -- Sprong seemingly fell out of favor, and was a healthy scratch in Pittsburgh's last two contests. The 20-year-old has been on fire in the minors this season however, notching 28 points (18 goals, 10 assists) in 29 games while being the AHL Rookie of the Month during December. If injuries arise in Pittsburgh, Sprong will certainly be a popular option for recall.

The highly-regarded prospect has three points in eight games at the NHL level this season, all coming during a wonderful performance against the Islanders on Jan. 5. In Wednesday's game against Anaheim, Sprong didn't see the ice after the four-minute mark of the second period. Barring a change of mind, Sprong might be headed back to AHL Wilkes-Barre.

Sprong registered two goals, an assist and six shots during Friday's 4-0 win over the Islanders.

The youngster went his first three games of the campaign without registering a point, but with the Penguins struggling, he was promoted to Sidney Crosby's flank for Friday's contest. Clearly, there was some instant chemistry with No. 87, and it's also worth noting that Sprong was just named the AHL rookie of the month. As long as the Dutchman is skating with Crosby, he's on the fantasy radar in most settings. Additionally, Sprong should be a solid option in daily contests until his price climbs.

Sprong was awarded AHL Rookie of the Month honors for December.

In addition to this honor, Sprong's dominate December -- nine goals and five helpers -- earned him a call-up to Pittsburgh. The winger's nine tallies also includes a trio of game-winning goals, the type of finish that the Penguins appear to be lacking of late. If the youngster can translate his scoring touch to the NHL, he may quickly earn a permanent spot on the 23-man roster.

The Penguins recalled Sprong from AHL Wilkes-Barre/Scranton on Saturday.

Sprong has been highly productive in the minors this season, racking up 18 goals and 28 points in 29 games. The 20-year-old forward will likely make his season debut with the Penguins on Sunday against the Red Wings.

Sprong picked up a hat trick and added an assist in AHL Wilkes-Barre/Scranton's 6-5 overtime win over Laval on Friday.

Sprong has scored at least one goal in all five of Wilkes-Barre/Scranton's game. For the season, he has seven goals and ten points in those five contests. Pittsburgh has perhaps the worst prospect pool in the entire NHL, but they have a difference-making talent on their hands in Sprong. Still just 20 years old, Sprong should be getting a chance at the NHL level sooner rather than later.

Sprong is targeting a role with the Penguins for the upcoming 2017-18 season, Josh Yohe of DK on Pittsburgh Sports reports.

Sprong is coming off a fantastic 2016-17 season as he racked up 32 goals, 27 helpers, and a plus-29 rating with QMJHL Charlottetown. The 20-year-old -- who was selected in second round of the 2015 NHL Draft -- is hoping to follow in the footsteps of fellow Pens' prospects Conor Sheary and Jake Guentzel who burst onto the scene and haven't left the Burgh since. Even if Sprong doesn't make the team coming out of training camp, he figures to see plenty of ice with AHL Wilkes-Barre/Scranton and will no doubt be on coach Mike Sullivan's shortlist of potential call-ups.

Sprong is expected to join the Penguins in the next several days, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette's Dave Molinari reports.

Depending on the health of players like Sidney Crosby and Conor Sheary, Sprong could see playing time against the Capitals. He scored two goals in 18 games for the Pens in 2015-16 before returning to the QMJHL to work on his defense. He totaled 41 goals and 79 points in 43 games (including the playoffs) for Charlottetown in 2016-17. Sprong's future is bright and he could get his first taste of the playoffs against Washington.

Pens GMJR has intimated that the red-hot forward will likely head to AHL Wilkes-Barre Scranton following the conclusion of Charlottetown's playoff run, but there's a chance he could wind up on the Pens' roster. At the very least, Sprong figures to get a long training-camp look with Pittsburgh in the fall of 2017 and could wind up as a top-six forward in the not-too-distant future.
