It was a goal-scorer's goal -- he wired a wrister over Elvis Merzlikins' right shoulder at 2:55 of the third period. Caufield has a goal in each of his last two games, and stands to benefit tremendously from the arrival of Marty St. Louis behind the bench. If anyone understands Caufield's game it's another talented small winger.

The Canadiens hope the coach, a Hall of Famer who is similarly statured to Caufield, can help unlock the rookie's potential.

The rookie forward skated on the fourth line with Joel Armia and Ryan Poehling, the unit responsible for Montreal's lone goal. His TOI was padded with 2:10 while on the power play. Despite what has been a disappointing season for Caufield, he's one of the pieces new Canadiens general manager Kent Hughes will use as a building block for next year and beyond.

Caufield hasn't played since Jan. 17 when he entered COVID-19 protocols and was forced to isolate for 10 days, which included a five-day ramp up period in Wisconsin, before crossing the Canadian border. He skated on the fourth line along with Laurent Dauphin and Joel Armia during Monday's practice. The 21-year-old forward, who was considered one of NHL's top rookies entering the season, has just one goal, seven assists and is minus-15 through 29 games.

Caufield (COVID-19 protocols) will be back with the Canadiens on Friday after serving his quarantine period.

Caufield had been skating back at the University of Wisconsin with teammate Joel Armia while the due waited to clear COVID-19 protocols. The 21-year-old Caufield remains mired in a 16-game goal drought dating back to Nov. 24 versus Washington. During that stretch, the 2019 first-round pick registered six assists, 42 shots and five hits while averaging 14:53 of ice time.

Both Caufield and Joel Armia, also in COVID-19 protocols, will travel to Wisconsin, where they will skate for the next five days. Montreal, which hasn't played at the Bell Centre since Dec. 16, has an extended homestand beginning Thursday against Anaheim. That will be too soon for Caufield and Armia, but depending on when they arrive in Madison, the duo could cross the Canadian border in time for Saturday's contest against Edmonton or Sunday's against Columbus.

Caufield will miss Tuesday's matchup with Dallas at the very least, but he could be sidelined for additional contests considering he's dealing with a confirmed positive test. The Canadiens will likely need to recall a few forwards to fill in against the Stars.

Caufield has eight points (three on the power play), 68 shots on net and a minus-12 rating in 28 appearances overall.

Caufield's season of futility continued Wednesday, as the rookie was kept off the scoresheet for the eighth time in the last nine games. With one goal in 27 games, Pat Hickey of the Montreal Gazette speculates the 21-year-old forward could be part of the wave of players that head back to AHL Laval. Several of the Canadiens' injured and COVID-impacted players will return during the team's seven-game road trip. The Habs also claimed Rem Pitlick off waivers from the Wild, so there are NHL-caliber forwards who will need roster spots.

Caufield picked up two assists in Saturday's 4-3 overtime loss to Nashville.

Caufield skated 13:00 and fired three shots. The Habs have faced considerable criticism over their inability to develop their top talent and Caufield's name has been included on that list, especially this past week. But it's far too soon to lump him into a group that includes Alexander Galchenyuk and Jesperi Kotkaniemi. If his manager is hearing those murmurs, we suggest you make an offer if you're in a keeper or dynasty league. Caufield has four assists in his last four games. The goals will come.
