Fischer announced his retirement from the NHL on Friday, Max Bultman of The Athletic reports.

Fischer played 45 games with the Red Wings this past season before he was claimed off waivers by the Blue Jackets. The 28-year-old played only once for Columbus, as he was a healthy scratch for 20 of the final 21 contests during the regular season. Fischer finishes his career with 62 goals and 75 assists across 523 regular-season appearances for Arizona, Detroit and Columbus.

Fischer has played in just one of the Blue Jackets' 18 games since they claimed him off waivers from the Red Wings on March 6.

EDGE Analysis

The Blue Jackets have gotten healthier at forward since picking up Fischer, who was only ever going to be a bottom-six option anyway. If Columbus gets eliminated from playoff contention, he could get back into the lineup to allow another player to rest. That said, he won't be a fantasy option even if he draws in. He's been limited to seven points, 31 shots on net, 93 hits and a minus-6 rating over 46 appearances this season.

Perhaps the Red Wings shouldn't have played Fischer in their two games against the Jackets last week, allowing Columbus to get a good look at the 27-year-old. Often a healthy scratch this season, Fischer is currently mired in a 39-game goal drought dating back to Oct. 24 versus the Devils. Even with his new team, Fischer is far from a lock to play on a nightly basis and could still spend some time in the press box periodically.

Fischer was placed on waivers by Detroit on Wednesday, Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet reports.

Fischer has a goal, seven points, 11 PIM and 89 hits across 45 appearances with Detroit in 2024-25. Placing him on waivers makes room for Carter Mazur, who the Red Wings are recalling from AHL Grand Rapids.

Fischer notched an assist, two hits and two blocked shots in Saturday's 3-1 win over the Flames.

EDGE Analysis

Fischer's stretch pass set up Dylan Larkin for the opening goal. Later in the first period, Fischer left for the locker room, but he was able to return and finish Saturday's game, ending with 10:39 of ice time. He remains in a fourth-line role, so don't expect a lot of offense. For the season, the 27-year-old winger has seven points, 28 shots on net, 80 hits, 11 PIM and a minus-4 rating over 40 appearances.

Fischer recorded an assist and two shots on goal in Saturday's 2-0 win over the Lightning.

This was Fischer's first point since Dec. 18. The 27-year-old was scratched for nine of the last 18 games, but he's played in six straight due to the absence of Tyler Motte (upper body). Fischer has just five points with 73 hits, 26 shots on net, 11 PIM and a minus-5 rating over 37 outings this season.

Fischer had two hits and two blocked shots over 10:06 of ice time in Thursday's 5-2 win over the Panthers.

Tyler Motte (upper body) is not on the Red Wings' road trip, so Fischer looks to have a chance to regain a spot on the fourth line. Prior to Thursday, Fischer was scratched for eight straight contests. He has yet to win over head coach Todd McLellan, and it's not helpful for Fischer that the team has done well with him sitting in the press box. The winger has four points, 20 shots on net, 63 hits, 11 PIM and a minus-4 rating through 32 appearances.

Fischer notched an assist in Saturday's 4-2 win over the Maple Leafs.

Fischer helped out on the first of Jeff Petry's two goals in the contest. The helper ended a six-game slump for Fischer, who was also scratched twice in that span as he competes for a fourth-line spot. The winger is at four points, 17 shots on net, 51 hits, nine PIM and a minus-3 rating over 27 appearances. Fischer is mainly competing with Tyler Motte and Joe Veleno to stay in the lineup, though all three played Saturday while Marco Kasper (illness) was out.

Fischer provided an assist and seven hits in Monday's 4-2 win over the Islanders.

Fischer ended his 13-game point drought by assisting on a Moritz Seider tally in the first period. The 27-year-old Fischer has maintained a steady bottom-six spot in the lineup despite his lack of offense. Fischer scored his first goal of the season on his only shot in Thursday's 5-3 win over the Devils.

Fischer opened the scoring for Detroit by tying the score at one in the opening frame of Thursday's win. The Chicago native added five PIM, four hits and a plus-2 rating in 10:37 of ice time. Fischer's offensive production will be limited due to his bottom-six role and lack of time on the man advantage, but he's capable of chipping in from time to time. Fischer has provided a goal and an assist through six games.
