With the New Hampshire native performing well, the Penguins may no longer be in the market for goaltending help ahead of the deadline. Looking ahead to the rest of the campaign, DeSmith's starts figure to be infrequent while Tristan Jarry sees the bulk of the workload.

The 30-year-old played very well and looked like he might steal a win on the road for the Penguins, but the game got very chippy late and DeSmith had no chance on the OT winner in a 4-on-3 situation with Kris Letang in the penalty box. The netminder still hasn't been tagged with a regulation loss since late November, however, and while Tristan Jarry remains entrenched in the top spot on the depth chart, DeSmith has more than held his own with a 2.60 GAA and .917 save percentage over his last 10 appearances.

DeSmith will start between the pipes Friday in Carolina, per Mike DeFabo of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

Carolina has been excellent at home this season, going 19-4-2 alongside the fourth-best home power-play percentage of 28.1. It was his second shutout of the season and eighth in 69 NHL starts. DeSmith had put in a solid performance against the Red Wings last time out, but he had been yanked in his previous two outings. But the Pens just need him to be an average backup option for them through the second half. With such a talented squad in front of him, DeSmith will be a decent play on those days he's in the blue paint.
