Brendan Bell was signed by NYR on Friday January 18.

Brendan Bell has agreed to terms with Frolunda of Sweden's Elitserien league. "Brendan is a talented all-round skating back with aggressive qualities. He has got very good grades from our contacts in both Switzerland and the NHL," said Frolunda coach Kent Johansson on the club's website. He played in 65 games with the AHL's Connecticut Whale last season and suited up in one contest with the New York Rangers. Bell didn't have an NHL deal going into the lockout and he signed with Frolunda for the remainder of the season.

Brendan Bell feels like a player lost in the shuffle because of the NHL lockout. He's had trouble finding work after spending the majority of the 2011-12 season in the minors with New York's AHL affiliate in Connecticut. "Someone like me, I would look for a really good job in Switzerland and they wouldn't really be too hard to find in most cases," he said Tuesday. "But this year they just don't exist, because the high-end NHL guys have those jobs. Initially, I thought this could work out really well. I could have the [hip] surgery [in May], I could be healthy in December and teams might have openings. Teams might be low on defensemen and maybe I could slide in there, spend a little time in the minors and get back up. But everything is in a state of flux." Bell will continue his rehabilitation in the meantime and he hopes to get a job in Europe by the time he is healthy.

The Rangers assign defenseman Brandon Bell to Connecticut of the AHL. As a spare-part defenseman, Bell has already been up and down a couple of times in the opening month. He only played one game with the parent club, which was Saturday at Edmonton. The 28-year-old is 7-21-28 in 102 games with Toronto, Phoenix, Ottawa and the Rangers.

There is a chance Brendan Bell will suit up for the New York Rangers on Saturday night. The Rangers play late in Edmonton on a west coast swing. It is possible Bell replaces Jeff Woywitka in the lineup as a third pairing. Neither has much fantasy value.

Brendan Bell has been sent down to the minors by the Rangers. For now the team has decided to keep Tim Erixon on their roster, so Bell has become the odd man out. He didn't play in either of New York's first two games of the regular season in Europe.
