Kearns announced his retirement from professional hockey Monday.

Kearns signed a one-year deal with the Linz Black Wings of the Austrian league.

Expect the undrafted left-shooting center to report to AHL Albany in the likely event that he clears waivers.

Kearns, 36, was able to score 23 goals and dish 28 helpers while recording a plus-16 rating in 74 AHL games, though, making him easily worthy of another year of hockey. Don't expect the Devils, in the midst of rebuilding, to give a player of Kearns' age much NHL time.

Kearns appeared in two games during his first stint with the Islanders of the season, failing to score a point and adding two PIM, five hits and three shots on goal in those contests. Though he's 35 years old, Kearns has been one of the productive scorers at Bridgeport this season and could resurface at the NHL level if the Islanders incur more injuries at forward.

With Casey Cizikas (upper body) and Cal Clutterbuck (lower body) going down during Tuesday's win over the Red Wings and Shane Prince (upper body) still on the mend, the Islanders are in serious need of forwards, thus leading to Kearns' first recall of the season. The 35-year-old is currently leading Bridgeport in scoring and is a solid two-way player, so here's hoping the vet can see some solid playing time during this window of opportunity.
