Boris Valabik is minus-three in his first two games for Wilkes-Barre/Scranton of the AHL since returning from off-season knee surgery. "He's got to get in game shape and get some timing down, but I think he's done a good job for not having played in a long time," Baby Pens coach John Hynes said. "He understands the concepts we want to play with. I think he's on the road to recovery." Valabik has value in NHL fantasy pools when he plays as he is capable of picking up a lot of penalty minutes. The bad news is that he has not appeared in an NHL game since the 2009-10 season.

Boris Valabik has inked a one-year, two-way contract with the Pittsburgh Penguins that will pay him $550,000 at the NHL level. He appeared in 59 games last season with Chicago and Providence in the AHL, while amassing 189 penalty minutes and 11 assists. Valabik was traded to the Boston Bruins on Feb. 18, with Rich Peverley, in exchange for forward Blake Wheeler and defenseman Mark Stuart.

Boris Valabik was not mentioned by Boston GM Peter Chiarelli when he announced the players that received qualifying offers. That would indicate that the hulking defenseman will become an unrestricted free agent on July 1. Valabik was acquired from Atlanta last season in the Rich Peverley trade. He spent the 2010-11 campaign in the AHL with Chicago and Providence where he totaled 189 penalty minutes and 11 assists.
