Matthews (illness) participated in Friday's on-ice practice session, TSN's Kristen Shilton reports.
EDGE Analysis
Matthews wasn't expected to be sidelined for long with the illness that prevented him from appearing at a player media event in New York last week, but it's nonetheless encouraging to see him back in action for the first day of Toronto's training camp. Matthews is back on the ice in Toronto after a low-key summer in Arizona, reports the Toronto Sun.
EDGE Analysis
He added pilates to his workout regimen over the offseason and is praising it's benefits. "I feel more flexible," said Matthews, who had no world championships, draft hype or busy appearance schedule over the summer. Matthews, who led all rookies with 40 goals and 69 points, is the first Maple Leaf to win the Calder Memorial Trophy since 1966.
EDGE Analysis
The No. 1 pick from the 2016 draft wasted no time making a splash in the NHL and also finished second in power-play points, first in game-winning goals, first in shots, and third in ice-time among rookie forwards. Matthews, who would've been eligible for the 2015 draft had he been born just two days earlier, was well-prepared for his rookie season after spending his draft year in the Swiss pro league, and right away was trusted by Mike Babcock to play significant minutes. No one is better in tight corners in the offensive zone than Matthews, who is a threat to shoot and score from anywhere on the ice. The Leafs have a very bright future ahead with Matthews at the helm, who fell just four goals shy of winning the Richard Trophy as the league's top goal scorer. He's an elite fantasy option due to his elite scoring skill, which is further buoyed by a cadre of skilled teammates in William Nylander and Mitch Marner.

Matthews will rest up following a long season and sit out the 2017 IIHF World Championship, David Alter of The Athletic reports.
EDGE Analysis
For most rookies, an 82-game grind will take its toll when they are used to much shorter seasons compared to other leagues. You add in a six-game playoff run that included five overtime contests and it makes sense why Matthews is opting to sit out Worlds. The 19-year-old should be the heavy favorite to get the Calder Trophy following a 40 goal, 29 assist campaign in which he helped the Leafs reach the playoffs for the first time in four years. Although no announcement is forthcoming, one would imagine the center will be named the Toronto captain prior to the start of the 2017-18 season.
