Matthews has served his two-game suspension and will return to the lineup Saturday against the Predators, Kevin McGran of The Toronto Star reports.

In addition, Matthews will certainly set a new career best in points with just three more needed to tie the 80 he put up in 2019-20. Without Matthews in the lineup, John Tavares will likely step into the first-line center role.

At this point, fantasy players should be bracing for Matthews to miss at least one game, though the center has no disciplinary history, which could see him escape with a fine. The world-class center is currently riding a five-game goal streak, during which he has racked up eight goals and one helper. If Matthews does miss some time, John Tavares would be a near-lock to replace him on the first line while Jason Spezza or Ondrej Kase could get bumped up to the No. 1 power-play unit.

Matthews gave the Maple Leafs a 3-0 lead with his 40th goal of the season. He also assisted on a Michael Bunting tally in the third that stood as the game-winner. With seven goals and six assists in his last seven outings, Matthews continues to play a starring role in the Leafs' offense. He's collected 72 points, 239 shots on net and a plus-12 rating in 53 contests.

Matthews scored twice Saturday in a 6-4 loss to Vancouver.

They were his 38th and 39th goals of the season to take the NHL lead.Matthews converted a Brock Boeser giveaway in the second with a one-timer over Thatcher Demko's shoulder. He then wired a slapper from the blue line that went off Quinn Hughes and in. Matthews and Leon Draisaitl are in a duel for the Rocket Richard and both sit in the league's top-four scorers overall (second and fourth, respectively).

Matthews scored a goal and added three assists in a 10-7 win over the Red Wings on Saturday.

His assists came on a natural hat trick by line mate Mitch Marner in the first half of the second period. Matthews' goal near the end of the second put the Leafs up 7-2, and it seemed like the Leafs were home and cooled. But the game became the Wild West in the third and another eight goals total were put on the board. Matthews' goal was his NHL-leading 37th.

It was a masterful performance. Matthews was 17-for-19 on draws (89 percent) and had six takeaways, as well. He now leads the NHL with 36 goals to go with two-way growth in his game. But more impressively, he has 76 goals in his last 100 contests.

He also fired an incredible 11 shots on net, chipping in a blocked shots and a plus-1 rating for good measure. Matthews had a point in each regulation period but never got a chance to make an impact in OT, as Patrik Laine ended the game just 20 seconds in. The performance continued a red-hot stretch for Matthews that has seen the 24-year-old superstar pile up nine goals and 21 points over his last 12 games.

He extended his point streak to nine games and 18 points (eight goals, 10 assists). Matthews got on the board fast Thursday night when he took a long pass from T.J. Brodie and scored on a breakaway just 21 seconds into the game. The snipe tied Chris Kreider of the Rangers and Leon Draisaitl of the Oilers for the league lead. Everyone held their breath when Matthews went mouth-first into the crossbar at 6:41 of the third and left the game, but thankfully he did return. We suspect he'll be getting his teeth checked in the next day, just as a precaution.
