The writing was on the wall with this news, as fellow puck stopper Kari Lehtonen landed on IR with an upper-body injury Thursday. Niemi has been somewhat lucky against teams in the Pacific Division this season, having notched wins in all of three starts despite a 2.97 GAA and .889 save percentage in that span.

Niemi was pulled on Tuesday after allowing three goals on nine shots. After he was pulled, Kari Lehtonen was injured in his relief appearance and that forced Niemi back into the game. He finished with 11 saves on 16 shots for a .688 save percentage.

It was an awkward situation for Niemi and an ugly performance. His .688 performance was a real dud. If Lehtonen is out for any length of time, it was an ominous way for Niemi to enter that situation.
