Gipson (shoulder) won't practice this week heading into Saturday's preseason opener against the Packers, Eric Allen of the Jets' official site reports.

Undrafted rookie Jamaal Pritchett brings a similar skill set to Gipson as a return man on special teams and occasional contributor at wide receiver on offense, so Pritchett could see the biggest uptick in opportunities during Gipson's absence.

He'll undergo further testing to determine the severity of the injury, but it puts him in jeopardy of missing practices and the Jets' preseason opener against the Packers on Aug. 9. Gipson's path to the 53-man roster is in the form of return duties, so Isaiah Davis and Kene Nwangwu would be in line to see more opportunities on kickoffs and punts were Gipson to be sidelined for an extended period of time.

Gipson finished the 2024 season with six catches for 39 yards and a touchdown on 10 targets. He also rushed once for five yards, in addition to returning 33 punts for 266 yards and 17 kickoffs for 489 yards.

Gipson was a non-factor on offense and saw declines in both punt return and kickoff return yards compared to his rookie year despite leading the league in punts returned in 2024. The 23-year-old out of Stephen F. Austin has a decent chance of making the team in 2025 thanks to his special teams contributions, though Gipson will likely face competition in training camp.

Gipson returned one kickoff for 25 yards and added two punt returns for 25 yards in Sunday's 40-14 loss to the Bills.

Gipson played nine snaps on offense but didn't touch the ball. He has gone four games without a target or carry, and the second-year pro's only multi-catch performance of the season came back in Week 3. Gipson's a fantasy non-factor heading into the season finale against the Dolphins, outside of formats that reward return yards.

Gipson contributed a 42-yard kickoff return to provide some special-teams value despite a lack of involvement on offense. That contribution was overshadowed by his muffed punt in the fourth quarter, which was a microcosm of the Jets' season. New York had just gotten a stop with 1:44 remaining but burned all three timeouts in the process. Instead of the offense having a chance to at least make it a one-possession game and hope for an onside kick, Gipson's fumble allowed the Rams to retain possession and kneel out the clock.

Gipson caught his only target for minus-1 yard in Sunday's 26-21 loss to the Seahawks. He also returned two kickoffs for 81 yards and added a punt return for no gain.

Gipson caught his only target for 17 yards and netted 19 yards on three punt returns in Sunday's 28-27 loss to the Colts.

Gipson was on the field for 27 of 51 snaps on offense while Malachi Corley played 12, so Gipson continues to be the preferred option in the slot. The second-year pro has just five catches for 40 yards in that role all season. Gipson also contributes regularly as a return man, though Isaiah Davis was the only player to log a kickoff return for the Jets against the Colts.

Gipson didn't catch his lone target in Sunday's 31-6 loss to the Cardinals.

Gipson remained quiet on offense despite ranking third among Jets wide receivers with a 41 percent snap share. He usually chips in some return yardage on special teams, but the Jets didn't register a kickoff return or punt return in the lopsided loss, as it was a lethargic effort in all three phases of the game.

Gipson is expected to serve as the Jets' No. 3 receiver beginning with Sunday's game at Arizona after New York traded Mike Williams to Pittsburgh on Tuesday, Rich Cimini of ESPN.com reports.

EDGE Analysis

While the departure of Williams will open up some snaps at receiver, Gipson likely won't serve as an every down player like fellow wideouts Garrett Wilson and Davante Adams. The Jets are expected to make use of two tight ends sets featuring Tyler Conklin and Jeremy Ruckert that would leave Gipson as the odd man out at receiver, and running back Breece Hall is also a capable pass catcher who could occasionally replace Gipson out wide or in the slot. Gipson will continue to offer his most utility in fantasy leagues that count return yardage, as he's locked in as the Jets' top kickoff and punt returner.

Gipson caught his only target for a one-yard touchdown in Sunday's 25-22 loss to the Patriots.
