Rams released DE Vernon Gholston.
Gholston ended up just being a body for the Rams' fourth preseason game, where he made a tackle. Out of the league last season, the No. 6 pick of the 2008 draft is probably at the end of the line.

Rams signed DE Vernon Gholston, formerly of the Bears.
The No. 6 overall pick in the 2008 NFL draft, Gholston has appeared in 45 career games and has zero career sacks. The Rams will likely try him out as an edge rusher in sub-packages, where he simply tries to run around defensive ends. It's perhaps a positive that Gholston is even still trying to play in the league at this point, but we're not holding out hope for much 2012 contribution.

The Rams recently hosted former Jets bust Vernon Gholston for a free agent visit.
St. Louis is looking to upgrade its nickel package behind Robert Quinn and Chris Long, giving Gholston and Andre Carter a gander. Gholston's early-career soft play and inability to pressure quarterbacks suggests he wouldn't help much.

Free agent DE Vernon Gholston worked out for the Lions Tuesday.
The Lions are deep along the defensive line, so they are likely just updating their emergency list. They also kicked the tires on fellow free agent defensive end Alex Brown. Gholston has garnered scant interest on the open market since the Bears gave up on him in late September.

Free agent DE Vernon Gholston worked out for the Texans Tuesday.
Teams are still kicking the tires on Gholston even though three different head coaches have given up on him in three seasons. We suspect the Texans were just updating their emergency list as they also worked out the likes of free agents Antwan Applewhite and David Vobora yesterday.

Bears waived DE Vernon Gholston.
Gholston lasts just one month on the Bears' roster. It's a bad sign for the former No. 6 overall pick that defensive coordinator Rod Mareinelli couldn't coach him up at his old 4-3 end spot. He's now failed in three different defensive schemes under three different defensive-minded head coaches. This month, Gholston was outplayed by practice squad types like Nick Reed and Mario Addison, putting his future in the league in doubt. Bears also waived LB Tanner Antle, QB Trevor Vittatoe and C J.C. Brignone.

Bears DE Vernon Gholston entered Monday's preseason game after Nick Reed and Mario Addison.
Reed is a 2009 seventh-round pick of the Seahawks that the Bears picked up while Addison is an undrafted free agent. In other words, Gholston hasn't come close to cracking the defensive line rotation. The former No. 6 overall pick is a long shot to make the final 53.

Bears DE Vernon Gholston "hasn't shown a lot" in training camp.
He was similarly invisible in the Bears' preseason opener on Saturday. The epic 2008 draft bust will get a few more chances to prove himself at defensive end in the Bears' 4-3 defense, but the odds he makes the roster are low.

Bears signed DE Vernon Gholston, formerly of the Jets.
The No. 6 overall pick in the 2008 draft never tallied a sack in three years with the Jets, so noted D-Line tutor Rod Marinelli has his work cut out for him. On a positive note, it's a low-cost flier and Gholston has nowhere to go but up in a 4-3 scheme better suited to his strengths.

The Bears are reportedly planning to sign free agent DE Vernon Gholston for training camp.
The Bears bowed out of the Jason Babin bidding early, so they're aiming their sights (dramatically) lower. In fairness, Bears defensive coordinator Rod Marinelli is willing to work with anyone, and Gholston deserves a shot to play end in a 4-3 defense before he calls it a career. A DE in Ohio State's 4-3 scheme, Gholston failed miserably as a 3-4 outside 'backer in New York.
