The undrafted wideout out of Oklahoma State caught 20 of 26 targets for 398 yards and three scores across 12 appearances as a rookie with the Chargers, but he's played in just 14 games with three different teams (Jaguars, Raiders and Texans) over the past two years. In a corresponding move, Dallas cut Antonio Callaway.

Johnson was cut by the 49ers on Thursday.

Johnson will now try to find another opportunity with a different team despite having just signed with San Francisco back in January. The 27-year-old spent the past season with Raiders, Texans and Bengals and has only managed to catch three passes for 24 yards since 2021.

The Bengals are expected to get Ja'Marr Chase (hip) back from IR this week, so it's interesting to see them add wideout depth when their receiver room will likely be back to full strength for the first time in more than a month.

Johnson appeared in two games for the Texans, catching his only target for eight yards across 29 offensive snaps. In a corresponding move, the Texans claimed Amari Rodgers off waivers from the Packers.

With Nico Collins (groin) and Brandin Cooks (wrist) returning from two- and one-game absences, respectively, the Texans won't have a need for Johnson, who would have sat fifth on the depth chart at receiver had he suited up. While serving as Houston's No. 3 wideout in the team's Week 9 loss to the Eagles, Johnson played 42 percent of the snaps on offense but contributed just one reception for eight yards.

Johnson caught his lone target for eight yards in Thursday's 29-17 loss to the Eagles in Week 9.

EDGE Analysis

Johnson was active for the second time since the Texans signed him off the Raiders' practice squad two weeks ago and snared his first reception. His snap count increased from five to 25, but that was due to Brandin Cooks (personal) and Nico Collins (groin) being unavailable. Cooks is expected back for Week 10 against the Giants while Collins' status is murky.
