No. 3 Patriots QB Tim Tebow didn't play in Thursday's regular season dress rehearsal.

The Pats held Brian Hoyer out of last year's third preseason game before sending him packing at final cuts. Looking for patterns with iconoclastic coach Bill Belichick usually doesn't get you far, but Tebow's roster spot is certainly on thin ice.

ESPN's Adam Schefter suggests that Tim Tebow's roster spot could depend on whether Rob Gronkowski (back) lands on reserve/PUP.

If the Patriots place Gronkowski on the regular season PUP list, he won't count against the 53-man active roster for at least the first six weeks. That would give them some flexibility to keep a third quarterback like Tebow. Regardless, we suspect the roster spot would be better used on someone else. Through two preseason games, Tebow has gone 5-of-19 (26.3 percent) for 54 yards with no touchdowns and one interception. He can't run New England's offense and isn't working at any other positions.

Coach Bill Belichick said there's a "lot of competition out there" when asked about Tim Tebow's roster spot.

Tebow got plenty of reps behind Tom Brady and Ryan Mallett in last week's preseason opener. He finished 4-of-12 for 55 yards, rushed four times for 31 yards and took three sacks that resulted in negative-23 yards. In other words, he's shown little progress as a passer. The Patriots have to decide if it's worth keeping Tebow as a developmental third quarterback -- they aren't using him at any other positions.

Tim Tebow has spent 99 percent of his time with the Patriots learning to play quarterback.

Tim Tebow was catching passes and lining up with running backs and receivers in addition to his quarterback reps at Patriots camp Friday.

Coach Bill Belichick indicated Friday morning that Tebow wasn't locked into playing quarterback exclusively, and he could continue to see practice reps at tight end or H-back. Asked whether he's willing to play different positions, Tebow told reporters he'll do "whatever the coaches ask." The added versatility should only help Tebow's chances of making the 53-man roster.

Patriots coach Bill Belichick declined to say whether Tim Tebow will be used exclusively at quarterback.

With Rob Gronkowski sidelined, the Patriots haven't ruled out using Tebow at tight end or H-back. "I think we'll use Tim wherever is best for the team," Belichick said. "I know that's what he's committed to doing as well, whatever that is."

ESPN Boston gives Tim Tebow a 25 percent chance of cracking the Patriots' 53-man roster.

Reporter Mike Rodak believes Tebow could "provide the Patriots value within their fast-paced offensive system," but terms his roster hunt as an "uphill battle." We agree, but it's hard to know what iconoclastic coach Bill Belichick is ever truly thinking. We don't expect Tebow to see reps at a position other than quarterback, or for the Pats to simply keep America's favorite choir boy as a publicity stunt in wake of the Aaron Hernandez ugliness.

ESPN Boston's Field Yates reiterates Tim Tebow is unlikely to take reps at tight end "or any other position besides quarterback" in training camp.

The Patriots signed Tebow in June with the sole idea of attempting to turn him into a legit quarterback -- a dream of Josh McDaniels since he traded up to draft Tebow in the 2010 first round. McDaniels isn't suddenly going to scrap that idea. The Pats remain deep at tight end, and Rob Gronkowski is coming back.

ESPN Boston's Mike Reiss stated on SportsCenter that it would be a "surprise" if the Patriots converted Tim Tebow to tight end.

Per Reiss, the Pats have "made it pretty clear" Tebow is in Foxboro to compete for third-string quarterback duties. There are no imminent plans for a position change, as New England has already stockpiled its offseason roster with tight ends behind Rob Gronkowski and Aaron Hernandez. The other TEs are Jake Ballard, Daniel Fells, Michael Hoomanawanui, Zach Sudfeld, and Brandon Ford.

ESPN's Adam Schefter expects Tim Tebow to be the Patriots No. 3 quarterback and inactive for most games this season.

Schefter senses that Tebow will make the final roster, but he describes a developmental quarterback role. We'll probably have to wait until preseason games to find out exactly what Bill Belichick has in mind. For now, there's no tangible evidence that Tebow will be asked to help at tight end.
