The Browns released Carder (knee) on Tuesday, Nate Ulrich of the Akron Beacon Journal reports.
EDGE Analysis
Carder's dismissal ends his five-year stint in Cleveland after the 29-year-old joined the Browns on a waiver claim in September 2012. The TCU product served as a backup middle linebacker during his run in Cleveland, offering his most significant impact on the team's special-teams units. Carder was deemed expendable after the Browns reached agreement Monday with fellow linebacker Mychal Kendricks on a one-year deal.

Carder (knee) signed a contract with the Browns on Monday, Mary Kay Cabot of Cleveland.com reports.
EDGE Analysis
Carder spent the 2017 season on injured reserve after tearing his ACL during a preseason game. The 29-year-old was a special teams captain for the Browns in 2016 and will likely have a reserve role in 2018 following the emergence of Joe Schobert at starting middle linebacker.

Carder entered concussion protocol Monday, ESPN's Tony Grossi reports.
EDGE Analysis
Carder, a reserve linebacker, didn't log a single snap on defense Sunday against the Jets, but was on the field for the majority of special teams action. It's unclear when he sustained the concussion, though. However, he is now subject to the NFL's concussion protocol and is questionable to play in Week 9.

Browns GM Tom Heckert confirmed Tank Carder is "in the mix" for the Week 1 strongside linebacker job. Fourth-round pick James-Michael Johnson (oblique) is questionable for the season opener, and without a timetable for return. The Browns will also be without Scott Fujita (suspension) for the first three games. Carder will be given an extended look with Craig Robertson and L.J. Fort the only current options on the active roster. Chris Gocong (Achilles) is out for the year, and expected to be placed on injured reserve.

Browns claimed LB Tank Carder off waivers from the Bills. Cleveland is a perfect landing spot for a fifth-round pick who was a mild surprise in Friday's cuts, as injury has decimated the Browns' linebacker corps. The majority of Carder's snaps should come on special teams, but it's possible he'll get some looks on defense, at least until James-Michael Johnson (oblique) is healthy.

The athletic Carder was a two-time Mountain West Defensive Player of the Year at TCU, recording 228 tackles, including 25 for a loss as a three-year starter. The Bills believe No. 147 pick ILB Tank Carder plays "a lot faster" than his 4.69 Combine 40 indicates. "He is an instinctive player. He is smart and he has played inside and out. He closes very fast," said Bills scout Shawn Heinlen. "He plays a lot faster than he times." Heinlen also believes Carder has "great" coverage skills even though he's been billed primarily as a run-stuffer. It's unlikely Carder will be asked to do more than stop the run as a rookie.
