The NFL has suspended Redd indefinitely for a violation of the league's Policy and Program for Substances of Abuse, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
EDGE Analysis
Bans of this variety are due to continued positive tests, which is evident as Redd has yet to serve a four-gamer for a similar violation due to his recovery from a torn ACL and MCL. Once healthy enough to return to the field, he'll have to bide his time and do his due diligence considering NFL commissioner Roger Goodell will be in charge of any reinstatement effort.

Washington Redskins running back Silas Redd has been ruled out for the season after being diagnosed with a torn ACL and MCL in his right knee, according to the team's official website. Silas suffered a non-contact injury during a preseason game against the Cleveland Browns on Thursday, and while it was initially thought that he had suffered a knee sprain, Redd said he was aware of the severity of his injury. “I got my boo-hoo and my tears out before the team came in,” he said. “I didn’t want those guys to see me like that. Just got to stay positive, man, I’m not dead, I’m breathing, so it’s all good.” Redd was slated to compete for a third-string spot in the backfield prior to sustaining the injury. Trey Williams and Mack Brown will likely be given more time on the field during the preseason in Redd's absence.

Redd (ankle) wants to prove he can handle a larger role, the Redskins' official website reports.
Redd spent 2014 as the Redskins' No. 3 running back after making the team out of training camp as an undrafted rookie. He only had 16 carries for 75 yards and a touchdown, adding eight catches for another 107 yards. Although the departure of Roy Helu leaves the third-down role vacant, the Redskins drafted Matt Jones in the third round to compete with Redd for snaps. Jones is the favorite to emerge as Alfred Morris' top backup.

Redd missed Tuesday's practice due to a "very mild" sprained ankle but may return to drills Wednesday, Mike Jones of the Washington Post reports.
Coach Jay Gruden appears to be exercising caution with Redd, who will battle rookie Matt Jones for the backup touches behind Alfred Morris. Realistic expectations for Redd this season are special teams snaps and the occasional reception.

Redd was limited in practice Wednesday and Friday, while being held out of Thursday's session. Even at full health, Redd's fantasy value is limited playing behind Alfred Morris and Roy Helu.

Redd (ribs) is questionable for Sunday's game against Indianapolis.
Redd appears genuinely questionable for Sunday, as he missed Thursday's practice while logging just limited showings Wednesday and Friday. If he can't go, Washington might need to add a third running back to the roster prior to Sunday's game.

Redd (back) is active for Sunday's matchup against the Buccaneers.
Redd was a surprise inactive in Week 9 due to back spasms, but following the bye week, the rookie appears ready to return to action. He'll serve merely in a complementary role, however, as Redd will be behind both Alfred Morris and Roy Helu in the pecking order for offensive snaps.
