Chargers WR Robert Meachem suffered a concussion in Thursday night's preseason finale. The Chargers currently have seven wide receivers on their roster, and Meachem was already toward the back end of that group. The concussion may expedite his ticket out of San Diego despite a guaranteed base salary of $5 million.

The Union-Tribune San Diego expects the Chargers to release WR Robert Meachem. Meachem is likely to be cut despite having a fully guaranteed $5 million base salary. He's played exclusively with the second-team offense in training camp and has just three catches for 59 yards through three preseason games. The Chargers are set to move forward with Seyi Ajirotutu as their No. 5 receiver. Dan DePalma (shoulder) and Mike Willie (knee) were placed on injured reserve Tuesday.

Robert Meachem had two receptions for 19 yards in Saturday's preseason game against the Cardinals. He was targeted just three times in the passing game. Meachem is behind the likes of Dan DePalma and Mike Willie at this point in the preseason and is candidate to be released despite his fully guaranteed $5 million base salary. Playing exclusively with the second-team offense, Meachem has three catches for 59 yards through three preseason games.

A person familiar with Robert Meachem's situation told the Union-Tribune San Diego that Meachem's body has "broken down" and isn't what it once was. Meachem is only 28 years old. He battled a hamstring injury for a brief period last year and had a knee scope in the 2012 offseason, but otherwise he's stayed off the shelf in recent seasons. Columnist Kevin Acee says Meachem can no longer separate, runs bad routes, has unreliable hands, and "has no business being on the field." Acee believes the Chargers should cut Meachem.

The Chargers' preseason opener showed Robert Meachem "is still buried" on the depth chart. At best, Meachem is San Diego's No. 5 wideout behind Malcom Floyd, Vincent Brown, Eddie Royal, and rookie Keenan Allen. Meachem would be off the roster already if former GM A.J. Smith hadn't fully guaranteed his $5 million base salary.

Robert Meachem was listed as a third-stringer on the Chargers' initial training camp depth chart. This was before Danario Alexander's ACL tear. Meachem was listed behind Malcom Floyd and Vincent Brown, with Alexander, Eddie Royal, and Keenan Allen on the other side. Meachem has had a healthy spring, but was not signed by the Chargers' current regime and is one of the most overpaid players in football. He's only on the roster because ex-GM A.J. Smith guaranteed Meachem's $5 million salary. Per the U-T San Diego, Meachem has looked "decent, at best, in camp."

CBS Sports' Clark Judge reports that a source close to the Chargers is convinced that Robert Meachem "won't be a factor" this season. Meachem would almost certainly be released if not for his guaranteed $5 million salary. Barring an unexpected trade, the Chargers will be forced to carry him as their No. 5 receiver.

ESPN.com's Bill Williamson "highly doubts" the Chargers could find a trade partner for Robert Meachem. Meachem's $5 million salary is fully guaranteed, making him impossible to trade and unlikely to be cut. Meachem is getting a fresh start under the Bolts' new braintrust, but the fact that he couldn't make himself a factor as a deep threat under vertically-obsessed former coach Norval Turner bodes very poorly for his 2013. Meachem is entirely off the fantasy radar.
