Head coach Jay Gruden said Kelley (ankle/knee) was rarely healthy during the 2017 season, Stephen Czarda of the Redskins' official site reports. "Rob Kelley, his second game of the year against the Rams, he almost had 100 yards and that's when he hurt his ankle," Gruden relayed. "He never really was quite the same, but when healthy Rob Kelley was very good. Unfortunately, he played in about three or four games not healthy and he just kept returning that ankle and we had to put him on IR."
EDGE Analysis
Gruden's comments don't jibe with reality, at least regarding Kelley's first issue of the campaign. In Week 2, Kelley's departure was blamed on a rib cartilage injury, which forced one DNP before a return Week 4. During the latter contest, he sustained the initial ankle sprain and continued to aggravate it until his placement on injured reserve midseason. When the Redskins ruled Kelley out for the season, two injuries were to blame: a high-ankle sprain and a Grade 1 or 2 MCL sprain. Kelley was one of many dominoes to fall in the backfield during the year, as all of Chris Thompson (fibula), Byron Marshall (hamstring), LeShun Daniels (hand) and Keith Marshall (knee) landed on IR. With Thompson, Samaje Perine, Kelley and Kapri Bibbs under contract for the 2018 season, it'll be interesting to see how the pecking order breaks down during the offseason program.

The Redskins placed Kelley (ankle) on injured reserve Tuesday, Stephen Czarda of the team's official site reports.
EDGE Analysis
Kelley has been plagued by lower-body injuries all season, missing two of the first five games before appearing in each of the Redskins' last four outings. After sustaining a high ankle sprain and a Grade 1 or 2 MCL sprain Sunday against the Vikings, the team opted for a safe approach and decided to shut him down for the year. Moving forward, Samaje Perine and Chris Thompson will receive most of the offensive reps in their respective realms, while Byron Marshall was plucked off the Eagles practice squad to serve as RB depth.

Redskins coach Jay Gruden confirmed that Kelley (ankle/knee) will miss multiple games, even saying that the running back may be placed on injured reserve later this week, John Keim of ESPN.com reports.
EDGE Analysis
Kelley suffered a high-ankle sprain and MCL sprain in Sunday's 38-30 loss to Minnesota, giving way to Samaje Perine after the Redskins' third possession of the game. The rookie fourth-round pick out of Oklahoma will take over as Washington's lead runner, a role he previously handled (with minimal success) in Weeks 2 and 3 when Kelley was battling a rib injury. Perine doesn't have great pass-game skills and is averaging only 3.2 yards on 66 carries with a long gain of 12, but he should essentially be locked in for double-digit touches each week for as long as Kelley's unavailable. Chris Thompson could also pick up a bit of extra work, and the Redskins presumably will sign a third running back.

Kelley (ankle/knee) has been diagnosed with a high-ankle sprain and a grade 1/2 MCL sprain, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
EDGE Analysis
Either injury on its own likely would cause Kelley to miss at least one game. Given that he suffered both at the same time, he's presumably facing the prospect of a multi-game absence, starting with Sunday's contest in New Orleans. The Redskins will turn to Samaje Perine as their early down thumper, with passing-down back Chris Thompson potentially also taking on some of the vacated snaps. Perine had 40 carries over a two-week stretch when Kelley was injured earlier this season, but the rookie ran for only 116 yards (2.9 per carry) and didn't score a touchdown or contribute much in the passing game. Thompson remains the best bet for production, despite slumping a bit the past couple weeks.

Kelley (knee/ankle) will undergo an MRI on Monday.
EDGE Analysis
Kelley led all Washington running backs with six touches after the first three possessions, but at that point, knee and ankle concerns forced him from the contest. In the post-game media scrum, he was seen on crutches in the locker room, a foreboding sign for the imminent future. Expect his status to be clarified somewhat once the appropriate tests are commissioned. If Kelley requires any sort of absence, the Redskins will turn to Chris Thompson and Samaje Perine at running back.

Kelley (ankle) is doubtful to return Sunday versus the Vikings.
EDGE Analysis
Initially diagnosed with knee and ankle injuries, Kelley's downgrade was accompanied only by the latter, indicating the Redskins have nailed down the area of concern. A return Sunday is unlikely, but his status will be one to watch in the coming days. Until he's ready for snaps, the Redskins will rely on Chris Thompson and Samaje Perine out of the backfield.

Kelley is questionable to return to Sunday's game against the Vikings due to knee and ankle injuries.
EDGE Analysis
Through the Redskins' first three possessions, Kelley led the team with four carries for 10 yards, while tacking on two catches for four yards. The numbers aren't eye-popping, by any means, but the backfield could be whittled down to Chris Thompson and Samaje Perine for the remainder of the game.

Kelley rushed 14 times for 18 yards and two touchdowns in Sunday's 17-14 win over the Seahawks.
EDGE Analysis
Despite not being at full strength and playing behind a banged-up offensive line, Kelley saw the bulk of the carries for the Redskins, rushing twice as many times as Chris Thompson and Samaje Perine combined. Of course, the 25-year-old back didn't do much with those carries, and Thompson out-gained him with 20 yards on just four attempts. Nevertheless, the Tulane product was able to salvage his day with multiple chances from the one-yard line that he took in for scores. It remains to be seen if Kelley will get the same kind of volume going forward if he continues to be ineffective. Washington will face Minnesota at home in Week 10.

Kelley (ankle) is active for Sunday's game against the Seahawks.
EDGE Analysis
Though Kelley has been cleared to suit up for the Week 9 contest, he won't be in store for a full workload after the ankle injury rendered him a limited practice participant throughout the week. Once he becomes further removed from the injury, Kelley isn't a lock to reclaim the bell cow role he held for the Redskins for much of the second half of his rookie season. Kelley has averaged less than 3.5 yards per carry in all but one of his five games this campaign and has already started to see Chris Thompson cut into his role as a result.

Kelley (ankle), who is listed as questionable for Sunday's game against the Seahawks, is expected to play in the contest, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
EDGE Analysis
While it doesn't appear that Kelley will miss his third game of the season, Rapoport notes that the running back won't be in store for a full workload Sunday. That doesn't come as much of a surprise, given that Kelley has seen fewer than 20 snaps in three of his last four appearances, with Chris Thompson emerging as Redskins head coach Jay Gruden's preferred option out of the backfield. With a meager 35 yards on 15 carries over the last two weeks, Kelley could end up falling behind rookie Samaje Perine on the depth chart if he fails to turn it in the near future.
