Thomas didn't play in 2016 after being placed on season ending injured reserve in training camp with an undisclosed injury.
EDGE Analysis
While Thomas' injury is unclear, the team has given no indication that he'll miss any time once offseason practices begin. Thomas is under contract with the Bills through 2017 and will be looking to make an opening week active roster for the first time since being drafted in 2013. He'll most likely compete for a depth role in the secondary and a special teams position.

Thomas was signed to the Redskins' active roster Saturday, ESPN's John Keim reports.
The 6-foot-1 safety may be thrust right into the action, as he will be active for Sunday's game. However, he likely won't play enough snaps to be useful in most IDP leagues.

Thomas (hamstring) re-injured his surgically repaired left foot during Saturday's third preseason game, The Washington Post reports.
Thomas will now require an MRI to determine the extent of his injury. The second-year safety missed all of his rookie season due to a Lisfranc injury and sat out the first two weeks of training camp this year with a strained hamstring. Expect clarification on Thomas' latest injury to come following the results of his upcoming MRI test.

Thomas (hamstring) will not play in the Redskins' preseason opener on Thursday, the team's official Twitter account reports.
Thomas has been sidelined with a hamstring injury, which will prevent him from hitting the field for Thursday's exhibition contest versus the Patriots. After missing his entire rookie season due to a Lisfranc injury, Thomas continues to be troubled by injury. He'll hope to be ready to practice some time next week in order to win a roster spot at safety.

Redskins second-year S Phillip Thomas is working as the second-team strong safety at OTAs.
He's behind Brandon Meriweather. Thomas is not expected to push for a starting job in 2014, but the Skins are hopeful he'll enter the mix next offseason with Meriweather on a one-year deal. Thomas missed all of his 2013 rookie season with a Lisfranc fracture. He was a fourth-round pick in last April's draft.

Redskins GM Bruce Allen said the team was high on second-year SS Phillip Thomas last season before he landed on injured reserve with a Lisfranc injury.
"We had high hopes for him last year," Allen said. "He was going to start for us and he ended up missing the year." Thomas, the 119th overall pick last April, didn't play a snap as a rookie. It's unclear if the Redskins remain high on the center-field safety, but they certainly can't rely on him as a starter in 2014. Washington still has plenty of work to do on the back end of its defense.
