The Patriots signed Mathis from the practice squad to the active roster Tuesday.

Mathis was not moved to IR until after final roster cuts in order to give him the ability to return later in the year. When healthy, he is projected to provide depth at outside linebacker. The rookie was selected by LA in the sixth round of this past year's draft.

Mathis suffered a leg injury during training camp July 31 that has since been specified to his knee. The 24-year-old has been sidelined since then, but his current recovery timeline makes it seem like he avoided a serious injury.
